"Notes From a Maine Kitchen: Seasonally Inspired Recipes" is both a seasonal sampler of fabulous Maine foods deliciously prepared and a series of thoughtful seasonal meditations from a creative food expert and a dedicated natural gourmet. Reflecting upon her choice to move to a remote farmhouse and live in Maine to experience "slow food" at one of its most celebrated sources, author Kathy Gunst helps readers remember some of the best good things about being alive, while ruefully acknowledging the occasional bumps and challenges along the way. Thus arises this seasonal sampler of Maine-inspired recipes. Month by month the tastes revolve, ever new, always tempting, always fresh. Here are recipes for Pan-Fried Cornmeal-Coated Maine Smelts in January, Triple Chocolate and Macadamia Nut Biscotti in February, Roasted Parsnips and Carrots with Maple Glaze in March, Linguine with Maine Clam Sauce, Ramps and Garlic in April, and of course, Best Blueberry Pie in July and Lobster Roll in August. The recipes are clearly written with ingredients listed first and standard measurements, with extra information and anecdotes about the food(s) in introductory notes and additional tips and trivia included in sidebars. At the end of the book are suggested menus, added resources, and a recipe index. "Notes From a Maine Kitchen" is a treat both to read and to sample the culinary delights of Maine.

In Memory's Kitchen: A Legacy from the Women of Terezin Review

In Memory's Kitchen: A Legacy from the Women of Terezin
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a testimony to the towering reaches of the human spirit. In the midst of the horrors of Terezin, surrounded by suffering, deprivation, and death, hungry women recorded recipes of warmth, comfort, and abundance. They remembered cooking delicious meals, serving delicacies and caviar, making aspic, cooking many varieties of dumplings. The hand-written cookbook they put together demonstrates that although the Nazis held their bodies captive, their spirits remained free, drawing strength and nourishment from their memories of happy days and fully-laden tables. Despite the wretched conditions of the camp, these women dared to hope for a time when they could return to their kitchens and once again rejoice in feeding their families.
This haunting book will bless your life.

Kitchen Table Counseling: A Practical and Biblical Guide for Women Helping Others Review

Kitchen Table Counseling: A Practical and Biblical Guide for Women Helping Others
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Do you find yourself listening to strangers pour out the details of their divorce as your ride the bus commuting to work? Do women stop you at church and want to "vent" about their latest go-around with their mothers-in law? If so, you may have the gift of counseling. Unfortunately, many with this gift fumble around for the words and Scripture to help people. Kitchen Table Counseling is a concise training manual for those hard issues we hear when people bear their souls.
Written by Muriel L. Cook and her daughter Shelley Cook Volkhardt, this book shares a myriad of counseling stories. The Cooks were missionaries to China for 14 years and now trek all over the country as popular keynote speakers for retreats. Currently Muriel serves as Counselor-at-Large at Multnomah Bible College. Shelly, also a missionary, co-authored the book, Holy Habits. This mother-daughter team has combined their years of experience in mentoring women, to teach the lay person how to bring a woman from crisis mode to discipleship mode.
The book begins with six principles a KTC (Kitchen Table Counselor) uses: (1) ask for God's guidance; (2) lance the boil; (3) meet her felt need; (4) take her to Jesus; (5) believe for her; (6) help her become independently dependent.
In the second section, Muriel and Shelly delve into some of the more common problems encountered with those ministering to woman. Depression, difficult relatives, temptation in a marriage, and pornography are only a few of the difficult subjects tackled. Always practical (for example, where and when is the best place to meet), this book gives women a how-to lesson. One of the most helpful parts of the whole book shows the different steps taken when working through a problem.
Few of us have time for intense counseling training. Many of us have friends and acquaintances in our life who need our help. Muriel and Shelly have helped equip the church to comfort and motivate hurting women, and for this I give God great thanks! - Carol Stratten, Christian Book Previews.com

Miriam's Kitchen: A Memoir Review

Miriam's Kitchen: A Memoir
Average Reviews:

I was touched by the special relationship that the author developed with her mother-in-law, Miriam. Through Miriam, we are all so fortunate to hear her life's story, and ultimately, many women's stories from the Old Country. While the author does skip around in thoughts, her essays touch on numerous New York style traditions. I enjoyed reading the index afterwards, and realizing how many different topics she had covered. My synagogue did a book review and it was very favorable. Just one warning: many of the recipes apparently are NOT coming out right! Be sure to read the hilarious disclaimer about the recipes in the front of the book. The recipe I tried (Choc. chip and pineapple cake with meringue) DID come out delicious and was very different! Also be aware that this really is not a cookbook, per se, so it should be read as a story. Some of the stories ARE holocaust-related and as such, contain sad episodes. This book mostly establishes a mother-in-law's successful attempt to bring Judaism back into the major portion of her daughter-in-law's life. Anyone who has decided to keep kosher after being married will laugh with sympathy at some early attempts to do things right!

The Healthy Kitchen: Recipes for a Better Body, Life, and Spirit Review

The Healthy Kitchen: Recipes for a Better Body, Life, and Spirit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have made quite a few recipes from this book, and have found mistakes in almost all of them. It's as if nobody tested the recipes before the book was published. In one recipe the cooking time had to be almost doubled, in a recipe for muffins there was no mention of using any liquid (juice, milk, oil, etc.) to bind the ingredients together, and a recipe that was supposed to serve 6 people called for using 12 avocados. I have had to adapt most of the recipes because of this problem. I also found that the directions for preparation were sometimes vague. For example, the recipe would say to broil something for 3 minutes, but not tell you if that was total time or on each side. I would have given this book 5 stars if it weren't for the errors. Most of the recipes appealed to me and the commentary by Rosie and Dr. Weil was interesting to read. I suggest that they make corrections and reprint this book.

The Kitchen Gardener's Handbook Review

The Kitchen Gardener's Handbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a gardener's book that shows plants in luscious pictures. Food is in beautiful plantings; lettuce among the boxwoods.
The book is divided into the 4 seasons and within each are; vegetables, sweets, greens, herbs, shrubs, flowers and the design for each season, then seasonal chores and menus. The same garden is shown in each season for design layout- basically an edible front yard.
I wish there were more pictures when examples are given, for example for those who do not know what a redbud looks like. This really is not a book for beginners. More direction is also needed--how do you plant cabbage heads? How do you harvest thyme? Do you use the leaves or do you need to dry and crumble them? This book sometimes raises more questions, than it definitely answers.
There are good recipes throughout, especially the pork tenderloin with apple and onion gravy.
The index is not really the easiest to use; if you look up herbs, it will tell you very little, you need to look up the individual names, they will not all be under the general label. Seed and fruit sources are given with their addresses, telephone numbers and web sites.
This would be a book for those who want to go deeper into gardening, especially those who wish to combine beauty and food and have an out of the ordinary garden.

Vegetarian Suppers from Deborah Madison's Kitchen Review

Vegetarian Suppers from Deborah Madison's Kitchen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love this book! It is great for exactly what I wanted to do...learn how to cook some fun, vegetarian dishes that even I wouldn't goof up!
Every dish that I've tried has been a success...that's saying a lot since my mother's only cooking lesson was 'how to heat a can of corn.'
One thing to mention is that this book is meant to build on Madison's other cookbooks. It is not meant to be a complete guide for basic family meal planning, just simple yet elegant main dish ideas suitable for casual entertaining.
With our only child in junior high now, and my husband doing volunteer work, we are up to having about 1/3 the time that a serious cook does for making dinner, and these meals fit right in.
Most of the recipes I've used take about 25-40 minutes to prepare, mostly because I'm really slow at cutting vegetables, finding where I set the teaspoon, etc.
I guess you can't see the contents or preface above, so here's the layout of the chapters:
1. Savory Pies and Gratins
2. Vegetable Stews and Braises
3. Pasta with Vegetables
4. Crepes and Fritters
5. Mostly Tofu and some Tempeh
6. Eggs for Supper
7. Hearty Cool Weather Suppers
8. Light Meals for Warm Weather
9. Supper Sandwiches
10. Basics (eg, guacamole, peanut sauce, tapenade, warm goat cheese sauce)
What I really like about this book is she explains things simply enough for a beginner, and uses mostly ingredients that I've heard of, but always takes things a step beyond what I'm familiar with, so I'm learning something.
So if you are a food snob, this book is probably not pretentious enough for you. If you have a large family and don't feel like getting creative with dinner at the end of the day, and just want something you can throw together fast that will feed several and probably be edible, this book is not for you. But for a family of 3-4, or a couple who likes to have something special a few nights a week, this is just perfect.
My favorite recipe is one for a couple of eggs cooked over mushrooms sauted in wine and bread crumbs...it's something I can throw together for myself in just a few minutes when I get home late, and I don't have to measure anything because you just put in as much of each ingredient as you like...and it tastes so good!
About the wine recommendations--Not only is it good for your heart, but new research shows drinking red wine on a regular basis may help prevent or delay the onset of alzheimer's. Since both health problems run in my husband's family, the suggested wines have been a fun way to incorperate a very healthy habit.

I adored this story. Clearly, Crowther is a masterful story teller. I enjoyed the development of her vivid characters and her love of language. As I was reading this book I had a deep appreciation of how well sentances were crafted, so deliberately and selectively. In many ways I was enraptured with this story as I was with Kite Runner. This is a multilayered story infused with heart, sadness and hope. I would highly recommend it. My thanks to the author for a touching, lasting read that I will gladly recommend to others.

Mastering Knife Skills: The Essential Guide to the Most Important Tools in Your Kitchen (with DVD) Review

Mastering Knife Skills: The Essential Guide to the Most Important Tools in Your Kitchen (with DVD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Mastering Knife Skills" by chef Norman Weinstein is a marvel of a book - visually attractive, overflowing with facts both historical and culinary, the ultimate guide to the choosing of knives, their care and upkeep, and their optimal use.
This book fills a real gap in the field of cook-bookery. I, a serious amateur cook, have been cooking for over forty years now, and yet, in forty years of watching television cooking shows and reading cookbooks (of which I own some thirty), I have never before seen any teacher or TV chef relate - really relate in any serious and systematic, way - to this most important of all our cooking tools, at least not until the present illuminating book.
One could be forgiven for expecting such a book to offer mere dry factual knowledge on the subject, but in fact it is excitingly written and lavishly illustrated, and Weinstein's style has a flow and a sweep that pull the reader along from page to page, like a good detective novel, from slicing through dicing, to mincing to filleting to fabricating - yes, fabricating - a chicken. The accompanying DVD, furthermore, is graphic and extremely well presented.
I have seen Norman Weinstein in the classroom. He is an inspiring teacher, who wears his prodigious erudition lightly, and enlivens his classes with a quick and warm sense of humor. That same encyclopedic knowledge, sympathy and warmth come across in his book as well.
And one last note: following Weinstein's instructions I sat down for an hour with a sharpening stone and sharpened all my knives to an edge the like of which I have not ever gotten from the "professionals".
While this may not be the only cookbook you will ever want, it certainly is the only knife book you will ever need.
Harvey B.

The California Pizza Kitchen Cookbook Review

CPK brings a wide variety of international cuisines to the pizza crust. I was delighted when they came out with this cookbook, but was disappointed to find that my favorite item from the restaurant, the Oriental Chicken Salad, is not included in the cookbook. Well, they need to get me back into the restaurant once in a while. The recipes make extensive use of cilantro and garlic. Also note, that although the recipes are easy to make (as cited by the other reviewers), the first time you make the recipe it make take a long time. For example, the first time I made the Shrimp Scampi pizza (listed as Shrimp-Garlic in the book), it took me about 3 hours, not including the dough preparation time. This is because just making one ingredient, the roasted garlic, took about an hour. Since then I have learned which ingredients can be prepared in advance. The Shrimp Scampi Pizza with whole wheat crust is the best pizza that I have ever tasted, and that opinion has been shared by everyone who has tasted it. It is better than the restaurant's and worth the trouble. Another family favorite from this book is the broccolli with sun-dried tomatoes. Again, except for getting all that garlic peeled, this recipe has a minimum number of ingredients, is quick to make (30 minutes), is extremely tasty, and can feed a crowd. You feel really special when you get to have this for lunch the next day.

Everytime I try a new recipe that is a winner it goes into my book. Then I have only one cookbook that I know where all my favorite recipes are. It's the perfect place to copy cherished family recipes also. I've used it for 9 years and even though it is cardboard it has stood up to the kitchen abuse well. I purchased 4 of these Dover sticker activity books for my daughter & her friends. This was the best one for the three-year old age range. The book is small, but that makes it convenient as a travel activity. The book is really a fold open scene (the pages are sticker sheets). You get a ton of stickers, in fact she couldn't get all the stickers on the book without tons of layering. Stickers are repositionable, but would probably tear after the 3rd or 4th round. Overall, tremendous entertainment value, and well worth the bundled price of $1.12/book. This particular book had every appliance, item, or gadget, you could think of for a kitchen plus a bunch of kids and pets to place in the kitchen scene.

Growing up in a Korean Kitchen: A Cookbook Review

Growing up in a Korean Kitchen: A Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first word that comes to mind is FINALLY! Finally, there is a Korean cookbook that contains almost every Korean recipe you could ever want. Finally, there is a Korean cookbook that keeps recipes authentic. Finally, there is a a Korean cookbook that I can turn to when my finicky in laws come for dinner! Growing up Korean-American it was hard to get recipes from my mother since as any other Korean-American knows Koreans never measure ingredients! I own at least 5 Korean cookbooks written in English and not one of them can compare to this one in it's comprehensive addition of recipes. There are 164 recipes in this book! In the author's attempt to remain authentic the gamut of recipes runs from the well known to the more obscure for those unfamiliar to Korean cooking. The recipes are fantastic.
This is a book for those who are both serious about Korean cooking and somewhat familiar with the techniqes involved. It is also a great book for those who are looking to fine tune their Korean cooking skills or add onto their repertoire of Korean dishes since after almost every recipe there are suggestions for ways to modify the dish. Just as every individual has a way of personalizing a recipe, the author does the same however, the author's personalization does not detract from the flavor that the dish should have.
I would think that this is not a book for those who are just looking to begin because the book lacks specific technical description of preparation and presentation. It would be difficult for someone who is unfamiliar with Korean food to know what the outcome should look like since pictures of the final product are rare. If you are just starting out or if you prefer detailed step by step pictures and instructions "Practical Korean Cooking" by Noh Chin Hwa is a great book, although not quite as thorough as this one but still authentic.
