Cabin Kitchens & Baths Review

Cabin Kitchens and Baths
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been looking for a book like this for ages. There are lots of great looking design books, very few offer real help. I found this book to be excellently organized with in-depth information on every aspect of kitchen and bathroom design. The writing is intelligent, without being overly technical, and good-humored while also giving practical solutions to a variety of design and structural challenges.
The photography, which as another reviewer pointed out, could stand alone as being quite beautiful, is very specific in terms of what is depicted as referencing the subject matter in the respective chapters and sections.
Another reviewer pointed out that the photography is redundant to what appears in the log magazines on the newsstands. I think that is untrue. I'm an avid reader of log magazines, and have been for a good number of years, and do not see any repetition at all. These photographs are certainly new to my eyes and are of the highest quality.
I find it remarkable that with so many books on kitchens and myriad publications on cabins, this is the first time that the two subjects have been combined in one volume. And, what an effective volume it is.
On a personal point of view, as a lover of great interiors and with a nice little library of good design books, this one has great pipe dream potential and one of these days I might even use some of the ideas in re-doing my own kitchen and bathroom.

Ciao Italia Pronto: 30-Minute Recipes from an Italian Kitchen Review

Ciao Italia Pronto: 30-Minute Recipes from an Italian Kitchen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Ciao Italia Pronto!" is a better cookbook in theory than in practice.
Italian food? Check! Thirty minute meals? Check! Sounds like just the thing to make a nice meal and still have some time between getting home from work and bedtime. That would be a false assumption.
American kitchens are certainly more sophisticated since the days when Chef-Boy-Ar-Dee owned the Italian cooking franchise. However, many of the ingredients called for in these recipes are still on the exotic side in my corner grocery. Sure, we have farmers markets, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, even an Italian specialty market or two but, if I have to fight traffic gridlock after work to go destination shopping for ingredients, it defeats the purpose of the Thirty Minute meal. The author recognizes this problem and provides a four page directory of mail order houses to obtain some of the required ingredients. This immediately makes about 40 percent of these recipes more trouble than they're worth.
If you do manage to find the ingredients, know that these recipes are neither simple, nor fast.
The recipe for "Lazy Lasagne" requires eight ingredients, and bakes for 30-35 minutes. That's cooking time only, and does NOT include prep time. Oh, and the tomato sauce for the lasagne is a recipe on a separate page. The sauce requires an additional eight ingredients and 20 minutes of cooking time.
Another main dish, "Fresh Tuna with Artichoke, Capers and Chickpeas," requires 12 ingredient and we're advised to make it early in the day, or a day ahead.
Some of the dishes are unfamiliar and pictures of the prepared food would have been a big help. There are only eight full page color pictures located in the center of the book, one appetizer, one soup, two main dishes, two salads, and two desserts.
If you're interested in this book for quick, convenient recipes, look elsewhere. This is far more complicated and time consuming than the advertised "....30 Minute Recipes from an Italian Kitchen." Not recommended.

In the Kitchen: More Than 1000 Recipes for Every Day Review

In the Kitchen: More Than 1000 Recipes for Every Day
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used this book last night to cook some delicious salmon and potato cakes which were straightforward to make and tasted wonderful. As an added bonus the cakes are a great way to get kids eating fish without having a too "fishy" taste.
Michelle and Allan's books are ones I have really enjoyed over the years and this one is particularly good as there are many recipes that are easy to achieve and taste fabulous. The night before I cooked a really nice sweet chilli beef stir-fry which did not require a pantry full of exotic Asian ingredients. Do not get me wrong I am a huge fan of complex Asian cookery and do it frequently but sometimes this is not what you want or in fact can be bothered to do after a hard day at work.
In having a large collection of cookbooks (1400+) as you can imagine I sometimes forget I have a book or I loose track of it for a time but when I find it again I get the joy of reading it again and doing some of the great recipes. This was a book I "lost" for a while but not anymore.
I will sometimes buy books because they look beautiful and cover a subject I am interested in but I am very unlikely to ever cook from them, The Big Fat Duck Cookbook comes to mind.
In the Kitchen: More Than 1000 Recipes for Every Day is a book that falls into another category of book I buy. One I use and refer to frequently. The book itself is well organized into useful categories including barbecue, stir-fry, roasts etc. The recipes are generally simple and in every case I have tried they worked very well and many have become family favorites.
Another part of the book I particularly enjoy is the little comments at the beginning of most recipes from one or other of the authors which gives a small insight as to why they have chosen this recipe.
Whilst the book is Australian I would think most of the recipes would translate well into other geographies.
My only complaint about the book is that it is a little awkward in is size and thickness but this is a personal thing and may not be an issue for others.
Overall a very satisfying book to use and particularly useful for the less experienced cook.

The book is not too full as to be overwhelming, but just the right amount with carefully selected dishes. Each recipe is accompanied by a beautiful photo, so you have an idea of how your dish should look like...sort of. I just love all the recipes! I made the coffee cake, and it came out deeeelicious!

What a wonderful blessing it was to listen to the audio version of this book which is actually narrated by Ronda Rich. With her stunning Southern voice, she speaks of both happy and sorrowful times which will tug at your heart causing tears to flow, but a smile to catch them. Ronda's words brought back so many memories including spending weekends and summers with my now deceased Grandparents in North Georgia, Camp Meetings and Sunday "dinners" with friends and relatives. This book makes me cherish even more my upbringing, my family and having such a sweet Lord to praise and watch over me and the people I love so dearly. Thank you Ronda for something so beautiful and truly unforgettable.

I simply don't see the point of creating a book such as this one. I've purchased many research/reference books, and have a particular love for all things 50s/60s, but the selection of items shown, and the almost total lack of editorial and research information, left me extremely disappointed. I don't know what the criteria was for choosing the items to feature, but I don't find them to be representative of the era, or even the best or most classic examples. The 50s and 60s were FUN! This author didn't bring any of that fun to her book.

Camelot s life changed overnight. From virtually being homeless he found palatial living quarters INSIDE the house, fresh veggies and fruit treats were offered frequently and love was in the air . A natural socialite, Camelot lives a pampered life, rich with excitement. He travels to cafés with his mummy, meeting and greeting people everywhere he goes. As I browsed through this lovely book, I envisioned my own garden brimming with produce. It's a great tool for starting a garden, but also just a wonderful book to look at. The photography is very good and the chapters make total sense.
There is a bit of difference in produce due to the England/America thing, but it doesn't deter from the usefulness of the book. You just won't find the same varietals as what's in the book for some species. An example is in the Potato chapter.
If you're a first time gardener, read this book first and then get started. Going organic from the first shot is the best option for you, your family and for the earth!
All in all, I just love this little book. It's not huge by any means. Just a simple book with great ideas. Nothing fancy. But, that's what Organic Gardening is all about. Simplicity at its finest!

This is a wonderful new book by Francesco da Mosto and certainly up to the standard of his previous publications. But this is not just a book of traditional Venetian recipes and pretty pictures. There are pages on life in the 18th. century Palazzi of Venice and four pages devoted to the humble fork. The origins of ingredients used in Venetian cooking are discussed in detail together with the variety of seafood found in the lagoon. I am sure you will be transported to the Grand Canal whenever you open this book, but that is not to say that the dining experiences on that fabled waterway are anywhere near as wonderful as Francesco shows they could be!

Francesco shows cooks how to prepare 150 classic Venetian recipes ranging from antipasti, sauces, soups, and fish, to meats, pasta, and puddings. He demonstrates how Venetian food is a fabulous fusion of ingredients brought together over centuries as merchants and traders traveled the Mediterranean. The ancient broeto (stock) and mollusk soups testify to this, as does the richness and variety of dishes based on fish, roasts, grills, tasty deep-fried delicacies, and sauces. Each chapter is introduced with the history and origins of the recipes, and throughout there are personal reminiscences by Francesco of his first encounters with his favorite dishes. As Francesco is keen to tell, his passion for cooking authentic Venetian food comes from home: "When I start talking about cooking, it is impossible to forget my father, his love and imagination for all things culinary. He has never feared unusual combinations of ingredients and seasonings, and I have always been a willing guinea pig."

Kitchen Witch's Guide to Divination: Finding, Crafting and Using Fortune-Telling Tools from Around Your Home Review

Kitchen Witch's Guide to Divination: Finding, Crafting and Using Fortune-Telling Tools from Around Your Home
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's a hard thing to be asked to review a friend's book. Trish is my friend, and even though our friendship developed after I got this book, it predates my reading it.
I'm going to be honest here. This is a book that I think should be in the library of most of the practicing witches out there. It is a very good introduction to the art of divination.
Trish not only goes through the basics of divination, but she does so in such detail that one could sit down and make their own divinatory system from the ideas in this book. Which is a good thing since she also includes quite a bit of instructions on making your own divination tool.
She doesn't stop there. She goes on to break down most of the existing divinatory methods and explores them in brief, as well as mentioning other divination systems that don't exist currently, but which should, given the current state of the art.
The reader must keep one thing firmly in mind while reading this book; these systems are described in brief, not in depth. There is no comprehensive table for tea-leaf reading for instance. The good news is there is enough information that one can extrapolate a table from experience.
This is the key to this book, experience. Most of the information in this book counts on the reader having knowledge of some sort of mystical practice, and being able to hear and understand and/or feel those internal promptings that tell a reader that this is true, that is not.
A complete novice CAN use this book, but if they try to use it as a "one book guide" to the art of divination, they will be woefully lost. It is a reference and it is a good one, but it the equivalent of the last volume of an encyclopedia, it tells you where to find the information you were looking for.
There are some divination methods that are not present. For instance I couldn't find the shell cast system used by Santerian clergy or a means of divining by bread that the Italians used. Based on what I know, I can guess at what the Italians used. There is a small section about bread, but it's very brief and does not encompass more than a few sentences.
It is an invaluable reference and companion book to many others. While reading it, I found gems of advice that I knew, but had forgotten about. I felt my mind stimulated so much so that two different divinations that would be highly appropriate popped into my head, and I found ways of using the systems I have more effectively. I even learned something about many of the systems I know about, like dowsing. It is also very easy to extrapolate from the knowledge in the book to use with other systems not mentioned.
For example: While reading this book and reading about bread being used as a divination I suddenly thought of a very appropriate divination for Samhain.
Make a loaf of bread, long and thin like a baguette. Concentrate on questions while making the bread and just before baking choose one end and that is to represent now. Let the bread rise and bake it. When cooled, cut the "now" end off and the patterns of the bread/yeast are the current happenings in your life. Next, cut the bread in half lengthwise, either top to bottom, or like a sandwich or any cross section you choose. Make sure it's lengthwise cut though. The patterns of the yeast will show you what is going to happen during the year. The further from the "now" end that the information appears, the farther away in the year it will occur. The half in your hand is what will affect you but is out of your control. The one remaining on the table are things you can directly control/effect. Interpretation is as for tea leaves.
It's an easy divination, and it's not mentioned, but it would be highly appropriate for a harvest fest like Samhain or Mabon, and the basics of reading this are contained in this book, but not the details. Without my experience, I would not have thought of this system, and no matter how I searched in this book, I would not find anything similar to it.
I'm giving this book 4 stars out of 5, and suggesting that those experienced witches who are interested in divination would be well served to buy this. I mean this sincerely without my friendship with Trish being part of this. I think that a novice who is willing to work could use this book in their list of references, but any of the "I read a BOOK" set of newbies will probably want to pass it by. Effort and research will required to get the most out of it.
