Sparks in the Kitchen Review

Sparks in the Kitchen
Average Reviews:

Take a talented chef, have her apply professional techniques to home cooking pursuits, and then publish a cookbook of the results and you have a vivid presentation of fresh flavors, new recipes, and explanations of what enhances traditional methods in SPARKS IN THE KITCHEN. Katy Sparks' restaurant is a very popular New York City venue: now her taste for innovation and drama is accessible to home cooks in such dishes as Soft-Shell Crab Tempura with Crushed Blackberry and Horseradish Relish, or Roasted Cauliflower Gratin. A peppering of color photos adds interest but the 'meat' is in the recipes themselves. A top pick for cooks seeking innovations and pizzazz.

Ken Hom's Chinese Kitchen: With a Consumer's Guide to Essential Ingredients Review

Ken Hom's Chinese Kitchen: With a Consumer's Guide to Essential Ingredients
Average Reviews:

Unlike the reviewer that hated this book, I found Ken Hom's guide to Chinese ingredients extremely helpful in navigating the unfamiliar world of Chinese cooking. Mr. Hom lists all of the essential ingredients, and tips on what brands to buy. If you want to step away from the gooey Sweet-n-Sour glop of Americanized Chinese cuisine and into the THE REAL THING, buy this book.
It appears the book was first published in the UK, where Mr. Hom has a BBC TV cooking show, and some of the ingredients are listed in metric with English names for ingredients (i.e., corn flour instead of corn starch).

Catchy title, but what's it about? It's easier to describe what this book is by explaining what it isn't!It is not a cookbook- although some wonderful food recipes have been included at the end of the book...it is not a sex manual- although sensuality is an underlying theme...nor is it a guide for catching the man or woman of your dreams, although if you adopt the romantic mindset Ms. Kryza encourages, you probably will...even if you've been married to him or her for thirty years!

Wow - what a little dynamo. Just got home last night from a cooking class featuring Jennifer Bushman and this book. It was fantastic! And, from such a tiny little woman ... I had never heard of Ms. Bushman as her show has not yet made it to Texas, but signed up for her class because it sounded like it would be fun. It was one of the best I've been to lately (and I go to a lot of cooking classes). She made (and we ate) the Chicken, Avocado, Bacon, Spinach & Tomato Club Wrap w/ Pumpkin Fries; Gorgonzola, Escarole, Garlic & Roasted Pepper Pizza; Chicken Nicoise Salad w/ Walnuts & Blue Cheese Vinaigrette; Fresh Crab Tacos; Rotelli w/ Roasted Asparagus, Mushrooms & Shaved Parmesan and Peanut Butter and Jelly Muffins. I'm still full. I wanted to devour every word of her book when I got home last night, but had to turn in as work beckoned today. I am ready to curl up with it this evening! Ms. Bushman was such an inspiration - made me want to cook great meals every single night of the week and made it seem entirely possible. FYI ... she told us she's scheduled to be on the Today Show October 10. I can't wait to start cooking from this book - and I can't wait for the next one. Hope she'll return to San Antonio to cook from that one for us!

Like other companion volumes in the "Mama's Kitchen" series, The Greek Mama's Kitchen: Authentic Homestyle Recipes presents classic family recipes handed down through generations along with anecdotes of matronly cooking wisdom, such as "Kitchen life is controlled by the seasons - create dishes from whatever vegetables are available that day" and "For that sweet, mellow flavor of the best pepper salads, you need to first roast (or scorch) the peppers." Recipes such as Fried Cheese, Roast Quail in Grape Leaves, Vanilla Custard Pies and many more capture the essence of traditional flavors, and are presented with extensive, explicit instructions along with a introduction to the nature of the dish and when is best to serve it. A handful of color photographs round out this value-priced compendium.

Mrs. Restino's Country kitchen: The complete wood stove cookbook Review

Mrs. Restino's Country kitchen: The complete wood stove cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had a copy of "Mrs. Restino's Country Kitchen" since it was published in 1976. Its cover is now tattered and creased, quite a few of the pages are stuck together with unidentifiable food particles, and not long ago I finally had to repair the collapsing spine with tape -- that's how much I've used this book in the last 24 years. Ironically, I was never a back-to-nature person, a vegetarian, or a hippie -- I simply appreciated this book for its intelligent, clear-eyed approach to food and cooking. Over the years I grew to depend on it whenever I needed an idea for preparing an unfamiliar vegetable, or if I happened to have odds and ends lying around and didn't quite know what to do with them. Recently I've been using it more than ever, since my significant other is a botanist and a fine gardener, and I've discovered a little of the excitement of growing fresh vegetables, albeit in a tiny urban garden. In short, I would recommend this book to anybody, rural or urban, carnivore or vegetarian, hippie or yuppie -- Restino's writing style is straightforward, unsentimental, charming, full of character, and clearly comprehensible. You don't have to cook on a wood stove to be infected by her honesty, her clarity, or her very understandable desire to know for a certainty where one's food comes from. As a footnote -- this book, and the distinct picture it provides of its author, affected me personally, to the point where I have sometimes found myself wondering what might have happened to Susan Restino -- did she survive the turbulent '70s, did she stay in the country, how did her own life turn out. I'm glad to see she is still active, and that this wonderful book seems to be forthcoming in a new edition. It richly deserves a multi-generational following.

If you're looking for a New Mexican - Southwestern cookbook that is simple, authentic and downright delicious, then this book is for you. Adela Amador has done a superb job of compiling a collection of unpretentious recipes that are easy to prepare and elegant in their simplicity. She divides the book into seasons and provides wonderful recipes for New Mexican classics such as Green Chile Stew, Fajitas, Sopaipillas and Bizcohitos. In addition she includes some other wonderful recipes such as Cranberry Pecan Pie and Chile Pork Roast. Along with the recipes, she includes an anthology of delightful stories which chronicle her life growing up in New Mexico. It is a cookbook that you will actually want to read from cover to cover - I did. I also plan to buy several copies to give as holiday gifts this year. All I can say is - buy this book, you'll be glad you did!

This charming spiral-bound cookbook takes its name from Adela Amador's much-loved food column in New Mexico Magazine, "Southwest Flavor." Organized seasonally, it pairs recipes and "slice of life" stories like "It's raining snakes and toads," with a recipe for margarita pie and Adela's anecdote about a summer cloudburst and hundreds of tiny frogs. Then there was the time Adela and her mother were roasting chile and the stove blew up! Adela describes how the reader can roast chile (with no risk to life or limb), and includes both savory and sweet chile recipes. Her childhood recollections take us back to her days growing up in northern New Mexico, with memories of the magical Christmas lights of Madrid, New Mexico (and the tamales that accompanied that holiday), and of being serenaded as a young girl on New Year's Eve, with a recipe for the posole that her family prepared.
Dozens of traditional recipes enhance Adela's "tales," edited by New Mexico Magazine editors Emily Drabanski and Walter K. Lopez. The volume includes a glossary of Spanish food names and terms, and an index.

I bought this cookbook about three years ago when I lived in Europe. When I have friends over to eat, they think I got these great recipes from friends in Italy. I have told a few of my friends about this book, and I was sad to see that it is no longer available for purchase. I have purchased several cook books, only to be disappointed. For Italian cooking or to impress guests, this is the one I use the most. The meatballs and marinara sauce can be made to use as a heavy hors d'oeuvre and they always disappear at a party or presented as a meal. I love many of the recipes, so I do not have any one favourite, but the ones I do use the most are the meatballs, chicken nicoletta, chicken cutlets in mushroom suace, and the chicken parmesan. I hope this cook book is available for purchase again soon.

Dinner was the time we all sat together and enjoyed Mom's cooking, but it was also the place we discussed the day, argued, laughed and basically caught up with each other. One thing Mom and Dad taught us was that no one" ate before the other. We always waited for each other and we all waited for Dad to sit down to start. What I remember the most was how good everything tasted. With a limited amount of money Mom created an abundance of easy, ethnic, earthy and Italian dishes. I have written this book for her and it is my hope that you will enjoy cooking her recipes as much as she loved Cooking For Her Family."

Jeannette Ferrary, a food writer for The New York Times and author of M.F.K. Fisher and Me, tells the story of her life as it relates to food. This is the journey from a girl's ambivalence about food ("women's work") to a career immersed in cuisine. Here are the changes she went through over feminism, career, food, marriage, divorce, childraising, work, and play. All along the way, food played an important part of her life, as heritage and legacy, as symbol, as nourishment, and as pleasure. The book contains many recipes as well as portraits of many of America's most famous chefs.
