I found this book at the library and picked it up, thinking it'd be full of frou-frou recipes that would be entertaining to watch a chef create on TV but not practical for a real kitchen. Boy, was I wrong. This book is full of true recipe gems. I went straight from the library to Amazon to get my own copy. Definitely recommended for anyone who likes to cook.

This one of the only yeast-free recipe books out there, and it is a must have for those that are doing the yeast free diet, or are living yeast free! Kitchen Table Wisdom is such a powerful and mind-opening book. Dr. Remen has so much packed into that book, that it's a gift to have the essence of it at my fingertips in this "little" book! For example, "The life in us is diminished by judgment far more frequently than by disease." I have found this to be so true. This is a great book to use as a daily practice for journaling, meditation and reflection.

Tom Douglas' Seattle Kitchen Review

Tom Douglas' Seattle Kitchen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Point number one: As a Seattlite, Tom Douglas' three fabulous restaurants have always been among my favorites. I'm thrilled to have the recipes for all my favorite dishes - Lobster Potstickers, Tuscan Bread Salad and Cornbread Pudding, just to name a few. And then there is the world's most amazing dessert: Triple Coconut Cream Pie. I don't particularly care for coconut, but I'd walk miles for a bite of this marvel. Whenever visitors come to town, we inevitably take them to the Dahlia Lounge and insist, no matter how loud their protests, that they at least try a bite. Without fail, they, too, become converts. Trust me on this. Douglas' recipes are well-written and adapted for the home cook. He does a great job of explaining off-beat ingredients and preparations. Where appropriate, he even includes photos of how to tackle some of the more unusual preparations that make his recipes even easier to follow.
Point number two: Not only does Douglas give you his best recipes in this book, but he has also written what should be considered a mandatory guidebook to visitors and newcomers to Seattle. Douglas generously mentions most of the other great restaurants in town and tells you when to go and what to order. His description of the local markets is so comprehensive, it should be mandatory reading for every new cook who comes to town. Clearly, this man loves Seattle, and he wants to share all the best of it with his readers.

I was so pleased to find this book! Imagine a gluten-free cookbook that doesn't use rice flour! I love the fact that most of the recipe instructions simply say, 'blend all ingredients' together rather than having numerous steps to follow. This cookbook covers everything "From French Toast to Fried Chicken". I'll be cooking from this book for years to come.

How to Boil Water Review

How to Boil Water

If you're one of those "Sure, I know how to cook...except I don't want to" people, you need this book. This book gives you the basics on how long you can keep meat, how to pick good cuts, what to do with vegetables, and the essential hints on everything you need to get started. The best part of this book aren't the recipes, but rather the reference guides on the things you never quite know, like how to cook specific vegetables and how to build a soup or smoothie. Great for someone who has just moved into an apartment, or for anyone who wants to get a primer on cooking. If you are puzzled about what tools you need, fear not--it's all very simple, and there are many, many diagrams in case you freak out with too many words.
I would say it's useful for anyone with less training than professional cooking experience. The pictures are wonderful.

American Vegan Kitchen Review

American Vegan Kitchen
Average Reviews:

I know what you're thinking...do I really need ANOTHER vegan cookbook? Or, if you have none (yet), why would I purchase this book? Well, I was a tester for Tami and her recipes basically turned me into a gourmet chef. Easy to prepare with simple and no-fuss ingredients, the recipes in American Vegan Kitchen make any meal feel special and even got the meat-eating boyfriend's hearty endorsement. Favorites include the (baked!) onion rings, City Skillet tofu and potatoes, an amazing marinade for tofu skewers (coffee and liquid smoke-- need I say more? Sounds strange, but it's the closest I've had to a smoky, meaty taste in tofu), and the seitan. Now, I've tried at least 4 recipes for seitan but the ones in this book never cause any of the usual problems (gumminess, flavor, texture, what have you). The cinnamon flapjacks are great, and the yeasted waffles are my favorite of the many recipes I've tried. The roasted garlic pretzels are adorable and great for a party. The San Fran seitan wraps are great for quick weeknight meals, and taste much fancier than the ingredients would have you believe. The mustard mac and slaw turned me, a former slaw-hater (I couldn't even stand to look at the stuff) into someone who has to be restrained from making it weekly. Need I say more? Probably not. You'll love this book....and if not, well, something is wrong with your tastebuds.

Kittens in the Kitchen (Animal Ark #1)

Mandy and her friend James find an abandoned mother cat in school. They decide to look after it and provide it a comfort place for giving birth to it¡¦s kittens. But they find that the cat has kittens in their school custodian¡¦s laundry basket. The custodian tells them to find new homes to the kittens within one week or else he will deal with it. Can they do so within a week?
This story is really interesting and it is easy to understand. I appreciate Mandy¡¦s sympathy, as we can see her willingness to look after and find new homes for the kittens. Although she finds lots of difficulties during the process, she never decides to give up. May be she thinks that she was very like the cat. Because they were both adopted. It¡¦s really touchable.
I would highly recommend this book to all young readers because it¡¦s very amusing. The readers may get a sense of caring animals from reading this book. I am sure that you will enjoy it.

What a wonder this cookbook is! I don't hesitate to say this is by far the most wonderful vegan cookbook I have ever bought; it is simply packed with recipes (and variations), and don't be scared off by the lack of photos, every recipe is simply so mouthwatering! Bryanna Clark Grogan provides delicious alternatives to dairy-, egg- and meatproducts, and there is simply everything you'd need in this book: bread recipes, antipasti, soups, pasta dishes, vegetable dishes, meat-style dishes, desserts (great ice-creams!), you name it. Heard about this cookbook via Ready Made Magazine. It had some recipes and a mini article on author. I wanted to throw a dinner party so I could cook all the recipes.
Fast forward a few weeks. Bought the cookbook and am glad I did. There's a good mix of meat and vegetarian items and the author even offers advice how to cook some of the recipes vegetarian.
I've cooked about 8 recipes since buying this (which is a lot since I'm a full-time mom of 2). My toddler has loved everything we've made.
I wish there was more quinoa recipes in here, but I can always substitute.
The beautiful photos inspire me to want to cook everything.

I have never had the chance to read any of Peter Pezzelli's other books but an article about Francesca's Kitchen intrigued me. I rarely read this type of book..I am more into mysteries and suspense. However, I was pleasantly surprised. It was a warm, enjoyable read. I could relate as my children have recently moved out and I, too, am an empty nester. Most of the story centered around the kitchen with Francesca's love and caring being expressed in her food and caring nature. I could just smell the garlic and tomatoes simmering. I highly recommend.

No one writes about Italian-American families with the humor, warmth, and heart of Peter Pezzelli. Now, with Francesca's Kitchen, he delivers another winning novel about how much we need the closeness of family--even if we don't know it.Where There's Food, There's FamilyFor years, Francesca Campanile was the queen of her home. Standing in her Rhode Island kitchen, making sauce from sun-ripened tomatoes, dropping in basil from her garden, and adding fresh onion, Francesca dispensed advice as liberally as she did the garlic, arguing nonstop with her son and two daughters. It was wonderful. But now, her children and their children have moved away. And for the widowed Francesca, no longer having a family around to pester, annoy, guide, love, harangue and, of course, cook for, makes her feel useless. Who is she without them? What she needs is another family that needs her, and when she sees Loretta Simmons's ad in the Providence paper for a part-time nanny, she's sure she's found it. All the single mom wants is someone to fill in for a few hours a day. But it's obvious to Francesca that Loretta and her kids need more--a lot more. Loretta's struggling to make ends meet. Every man she brings home is a disaster. And her kids could definitely use some guidance--and a little lasagna, frankly. In these frazzled, disconnected people, Francesca senses a hunger and loneliness as deep as her own. It's time for Francesca to work her magic--if she can--and the best place to start is the kitchen...Funny and moving, with a heroine to adore, Francesca's Kitchen is a delicious story about sharing love, life, advice, and, above all, food. Peter Pezzelli was born and raised in Rhode Island. A graduate of Wesleyan University, he lives with his wife, two children and their dog in Rhode Island where, most days, he is busy at work on his next novel. Every Sunday, however, if he's not riding his bike, you'll find him and his family at the dinner table, enjoying a plate of rabes and sausage, or a nice fritatta, or some other favorite Italian dish cooked up by his wife.Praise for the Novels of Peter PezzelliEvery Sunday"A sweet, brave, and funny novel--with a heart as big as the entire state of Rhode Island."--Claire Cook, author of Must Love DogsHome To ItalyA BookSense Pick! "A beautiful novel...Peter Pezzelli captures the warmth of Italy--family, friendships, and food--invites us into the world of his wonderful characters, and takes us full circle on a journey of life and love."--Luanne Rice, New York Times bestselling author"Bighearted and wise, Home to Italy is a charming ode to the romance of new beginnings and the Italian gusto for life. Peter Pezzelli's tale of a widower who returns to his childhood town in Abruzzo to rebuild his life, only to be struck by the legendary thunderbolt of love, is a continuous delight."--Louisa Ermelino, author of Joey Dee Gets Wise"With heartwarming touches of humor, Home to Italy reaffirms that life can always be renewed. This is a wonderfully satisfying romance that brings to life the sights, sounds and tastes of Italy."--Romantic Times"A warmhearted novel, perfect for an autumn evening in front of the fire."--Litchfield Enquirer--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

This book lays out a spiritual practice of reconnection with nature and the seasons of the year through the food we eat and its preparation. As with all paths there is a need to establish the environment and rituals for practice that enable the alchemy of transformation. With chapters on setting up the sacred space of the kitchen and rituals based around the wheel of the year, the stage is set for connection to our world through feeding our bodies. The healthy, earthy vegetarian recipes sound deeply satisfying for both body and soul. The dishes I have tried were a joy to make and eat.

In Brief: Short Takes on the Personal Review

In Brief: Short Takes on the Personal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I find this book an excellent companion to Kitchen's and Jones' first book on the creative nonfiction "short" entitled, In Short: A Collection of Brief Creative Nonfiction. The evolution of creative nonfiction and the "short" is apparent in these pages. No longer is it mandatory that a literary journalist or creative nonfiction writer "immerse" the reader in a person, place or thing. These pieces of creative nonfiction show that writers can make a simple journal entry, letter, or, for that fact, an email, stand on its own -- that even the smallest episode in our lives, or simple everyday pictures we've taken with our mind's eye, can have "symbolic realities." As a person who reads and writes prose and poetry, I find the brevity, and yet complexity, of the works appealing. Mary Oliver, who I've enjoyed as a poet, turns a poetic list of items she finds at the beach into a prose piece on beauty and existence. Kimberly Gorall turns a brief childhood conversation with her mother into a statement about womanhood. William Heyen uses one simple paragraph explaining the habits of an insect to an analogy on creativity and imagination. A bright high school senior, Janice Best (editor of Elan), uses an ingenius email format to try to explain why she writes. All of these "shorts" have a similar element -- they start with detail -- an intense focus -- and they end making a statement about our human existence. I have been liberated by the form presented in these pages -- and plan to teach college students using this book as a reader. But I believe any one who enjoys learning about the 'human condition' will enjoy this book. It's a quick read, but the impact of the material here lasts a long time.
