Vegetarian (Best of Williams-Sonoma Kitchen Library)
Average Reviews:

A passionate home cook that has been honing her cooking skills for the last 25 years, concentrating on Italian cooking for the last 10 years, writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute and "Culinary Artistry". With more than 500 cookbooks in my collection I am usually disappointed in my recent cookbook acquisitions. This book is a nice addition to any cookbook library if you have a vegetarian in your family or just want to add a few meatless meals to your family table.
The book is subdivided as follows:
Introduction
Starters and Salads
Soups and Stews
Sauteed & Stir Fried Vegetables
Boiled and Steamed Vegetables
Baked, Roasted and Grilled Vegetables
Beans and Legumes
Pasta, Polenta & Rice
Eggs and Cheese
Basic Recipes & Techniques
This book is vegetarian, not vegan. However, there are many recipes in the book that are vegan or that can be easily changed to make them vegan. As a new follower of the mostly vegan "Eat to Live" plan I have been purchasing vegetarian cookbooks with abandon looking for new flavor ideas. This book has added a number of new recipes to my cooking repertoire.
My overall observations about the book are as follows:
Pros:
1.Book covers many ethnic cuisines in its recipes
2.Recipe directions are very thorough
3.Covers many different techniques for preparing veggies (stir fry, baking, roasting, grilling, etc.)
4.Many but not all of the recipes are healthy
5.Color photographs of all the dishes are provided
6.Small book, doesn't take up too much room on the counter
7.Nice sturdy binding that will stand up to many years of constant useCons:
1.No desserts
2.Uses while flour where whole wheat would work
3.Uses full fat-bechamel where low-fat bechamel would work and be a healthier option
4.Uses full fat cream a little too liberally
As a cook that relies mostly on Italian Cuisine and that is new to mostly vegan cooking I found many ideas in this book that I could add to my family table. If you wish to expand your cooking to include multiple ethnicities in a vegetarian environment I would recommend this book. I have given this book 4 stars instead of 5 because it did not try to make the recipes healthier by reducing the white flour and full fat dairy where appropriate.

I have used Holly's Trim & Terrific cookbooks for 10 or more years. Her cookbooks are the ones I turn to over and over because when it comes down to it, I usually need something quick, easy, with ingredients I have at home and most importantly, something my family will gobble up. I believe I could put anything in front of my 12 year old son and tell him it was from Holly's cookbook and he would dig in and love every bite. He says she is the best cooker ever.
Gulf Coast Favorites - continues her tradition of fabulous tasting recipes that are quick & anyone can prepare them. Oh and the 'trim' part is a plus too. I like these southern & Cajun inspired dishes since we are from the south - these are recipes we are familiar with and love.
Thanks again Holly....Sheila

Sparks in the Kitchen Review

Sparks in the Kitchen

Take a talented chef, have her apply professional techniques to home cooking pursuits, and then publish a cookbook of the results and you have a vivid presentation of fresh flavors, new recipes, and explanations of what enhances traditional methods in SPARKS IN THE KITCHEN. Katy Sparks' restaurant is a very popular New York City venue: now her taste for innovation and drama is accessible to home cooks in such dishes as Soft-Shell Crab Tempura with Crushed Blackberry and Horseradish Relish, or Roasted Cauliflower Gratin. A peppering of color photos adds interest but the 'meat' is in the recipes themselves. A top pick for cooks seeking innovations and pizzazz.

Kissing in the Kitchen - Cooking with Passion
by Kevin T. Roberts
Northland Publishing
ISBN 0-87358-931-9
Published September 2007 - Softcover - 168 pages - $16.95
Now, I know the kitchen has more than one use, and with author/chef Kevin T. Roberts' words, "...there's nothing sexier than a man who can cook," you're in for a treat whether you're planning a first date or a romantic evening with your spouse, and whether or not it's a man doing the cooking. Planning a meal (the thought does count) and being thoughtful is helpful when trying to impress your date. We're also given romantic hints throughout the book, like Romantic Songs and Date Movies if you're really not that clued up. Contents cover Breakfast in Bed; Nibbles; Hot Days, Cool Salads & Chilly Nights, Hot Soups; Birds of a Feather; Hog Heaven; Meathead; Something's Fishy; Veggin' Out; Passionate Pastas; Sexy Sauces; Guilty Pleasures, and Picnics, Parties, Movies, and Toasts. These are some of his recipes to get your next date off to a good start: Avocado Spread; French Onion Soup (with Mozzarella, not Gruyère); Mushrooms and White Wine Chicken; Mindless Meatloaf; Green Beans and Mushrooms in Garlic Sauce, and Shrimp and Garlic Linguine with White Wine Sauce. Pick a main course and a side dish and a dessert from this book; or a salad or soup and a main course and side dish - they work well together. Kevin also gives us the Top 5 Guy Drinks and the Top 5 Gal Drinks to help you in the cocktail department, as well as 411 Tips for recipes and some aphrodisiac foods in case you need some help. Could this just be the "love chef?"
Partially illustrated. No nutritional guides.
Conclusion - This book could appeal to guys, but would work well in any kitchen.

Ken Hom's Chinese Kitchen: With a Consumer's Guide to Essential Ingredients
Average Reviews:

Unlike the reviewer that hated this book, I found Ken Hom's guide to Chinese ingredients extremely helpful in navigating the unfamiliar world of Chinese cooking. Mr. Hom lists all of the essential ingredients, and tips on what brands to buy. If you want to step away from the gooey Sweet-n-Sour glop of Americanized Chinese cuisine and into the THE REAL THING, buy this book.
It appears the book was first published in the UK, where Mr. Hom has a BBC TV cooking show, and some of the ingredients are listed in metric with English names for ingredients (i.e., corn flour instead of corn starch).

Stay Out of the Kitchen: An Albertina Merci Novel Review

Stay Out of the Kitchen: An Albertina Merci Novel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mable John and David Ritz bring back the Reverend Albertina Walker and the hilarious cast of characters in their sophomore novel, Stay Out of the Kitchen. Some of the returning characters include: the insatiable Justine, Albertina's neighbor and neighborhood sexpot; the bi-racial rabbi, Naomi Cohen; the lovesick Clifford Bloom and her nephew Patrick. Also, new characters enter Albertina's world, keeping her life interesting.
Albertina is being pursued by a Shakespeare quoting diner cook, Mario. They would make a good couple, however he is an atheist and she preaches and lives by the word of God. She is also being pursued by one of her church members, Clifford Bloom. In his unassuming manner, he vies for her attention. While being chased by the two men, Albertina is also being pursued by Bishop Gold. The Bishop wants to purchase the block in which her church stands in order to build his mega church. Albetina`s church is the only thing standing in his way. It looks like God is working everything out when her childhood church in Dallas, Texas, makes her an attractive offer to take over the church. In the end, a surprise awaits.
I recently had a chance to hear Dr. John speak and she is a wonderful storyteller. She has a plethora of stories about her days as an entertainer and working for the legendary Ray Charles. Some of these stories were incorporated throughout this book. While listening to her speak, it appeared Dr. John's and Rev. Albertina's lives seemed to follow similar paths. The stories she told were not only entertaining, but the lessons learned were helpful to her followers and friends.
Again, Mable John and David Ruiz have come up with an entertaining and witty novel that will keep the reader glued to their seats, whispering a word of prayer and laughing out loud. If you have not read the first in this trilogy, Sanctified Blues, I suggest you pick it up and then settle in with Stay Out of the Kitchen.

Albertina Merci is back in this delightful second book featuring everyone's favorite blues singer turned evangelist! After Albertina's dear friend Mr. Mario, the owner of Mr. Mario's Downhome Café, has a heart attack and then loses his wife to diabetes, he decides that his lifetime love of soul food is over for good. Mr. Mario vows to go healthy, both personally and professionally, and tries to get Albertina on board, but it quickly becomes clear that he may be looking for more than pastoral support. And while he is undeniably romantic, Mr. Mario believes in the power of man…not God.The only heat isn't in the kitchen, though. Clifford Bloom, a white DJ who has been a fan of Albertina's since her days as a blues singer, is now a member of her church and he always seems to be there just when Albertina needs him. Could this blossoming friendship be leading somewhere romantic?Caught between two very different men, Pastor Merci also has to battle to save her little church in the heart of Los Angeles as mega-church pastor Bishop Gold wants not only the land where her church sits, but her nephew Patrick's loyalty, as well.

The Wooden Spoon Book of Home-Style Soups, Stews, Chowders, Chilis and Gumbos: Favorite Recipes from The Wooden Spoon Kitchen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Wooden Spoon cookbook offers a wide range of recipes for soups and stews. The recipes are easy to follow and, unlike many specialty cookbooks, rely on simple, everyday ingedients that most basic kitchens will have on hand or at least that can be obtained from any corner grocery store.
Many novice cooks fear that making soup will be a long, involved process. The Wooden Spoon cookbook should put that fear to rest.
The book contains several useful features, especially helpful for the those new to the soup making process, but also as a refresher for the veteran, including a glossary of terms and suggestions for basic ingredients to keep on hand for when the spirit moves one to make soup or a stew.
The occasional anecdote or interjected comment about a recipe or its origins adds to the cookbook's value, making it both interesting reading and a great addition to the kitchen bookshelf.

Catchy title, but what's it about? It's easier to describe what this book is by explaining what it isn't!It is not a cookbook- although some wonderful food recipes have been included at the end of the book...it is not a sex manual- although sensuality is an underlying theme...nor is it a guide for catching the man or woman of your dreams, although if you adopt the romantic mindset Ms. Kryza encourages, you probably will...even if you've been married to him or her for thirty years!

Wow - what a little dynamo. Just got home last night from a cooking class featuring Jennifer Bushman and this book. It was fantastic! And, from such a tiny little woman ... I had never heard of Ms. Bushman as her show has not yet made it to Texas, but signed up for her class because it sounded like it would be fun. It was one of the best I've been to lately (and I go to a lot of cooking classes). She made (and we ate) the Chicken, Avocado, Bacon, Spinach & Tomato Club Wrap w/ Pumpkin Fries; Gorgonzola, Escarole, Garlic & Roasted Pepper Pizza; Chicken Nicoise Salad w/ Walnuts & Blue Cheese Vinaigrette; Fresh Crab Tacos; Rotelli w/ Roasted Asparagus, Mushrooms & Shaved Parmesan and Peanut Butter and Jelly Muffins. I'm still full. I wanted to devour every word of her book when I got home last night, but had to turn in as work beckoned today. I am ready to curl up with it this evening! Ms. Bushman was such an inspiration - made me want to cook great meals every single night of the week and made it seem entirely possible. FYI ... she told us she's scheduled to be on the Today Show October 10. I can't wait to start cooking from this book - and I can't wait for the next one. Hope she'll return to San Antonio to cook from that one for us!
