Savoring the Past: The French Kitchen and Table from 1300 to 1789 Review

If you are obsessed with cooking and want a sense of the history of French cooking and cookbooks, this is the book for you. Don't buy it if you are looking for a fun dramatic read. I give it 4 stars, mostly for not contextualizing the cooking enough within the times; it's more a scholarly paper on cookbooks. She is more focused on recipes, origins of recipes, and history of recipes. However it is fun and very cool to have the 25 transcribed recipes in the back. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Gourmet Meals in Crappy Little Kitchens Review

I guess you could say I have a small and crappy kitchen by the standards of most cooking shows. This you could say for pretty much all Americans. I found this book to be very helpful! The recipes are not overly complicated and the author gives you tons of tips on how to save time and space. But here is the best part: the meals you learn to make are actually extremely GOOD! You can tell this lady is a talented chef. The book shows you how to make very complex dishes in a simple manner. If you've been wanting to get into cooking but don't seem to have the time or the space this book is for you. It's already helped me a ton.

A Cook's Journey to Japan: Fish Tales and Rice Paddies 100 Homestyle Recipes from Japanese Kitchens Review

A Cook's Journey to Japan: Fish Tales and Rice Paddies 100 Homestyle Recipes from Japanese Kitchens

While the recipes in this book are sound, my largest complaint of this book is that they are all quite bland. They are the kind of foods one gets at Benihana when one orders from the menu instead of the Teppanyaki. Its not bad food, just very white bread and butter. The author's recipe descriptions are more bragging about her travels than anything else, not helpful to the recipes in any way. And I just find the whole book to be rather shallow, albeit nicely photographed. If you are looking for Japanese food recipes of any kind, then let Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art be your bible. As for this book, pick it up in a bargain bin, but pay full price for something else.

The Good Housekeeping Cookbook: 1,275 Recipes from America's Favorite Test Kitchen (Good Housekeeping Cookbooks) Review

The Good Housekeeping Cookbook: 1,275 Recipes from America's Favorite Test Kitchen (Good Housekeeping Cookbooks)

We own the 1962 edition of the Good Housekeeping Cookbook and refer to it often. This 125th anniversary edition reminds us of how much dining trends have changed in the last 40 or so years, with much more space devoted to fresh rather than canned foods and lighter, healthier fare. This volume has easy to read typeface, beautiful color photographs, and every category a home cook could want, from pastas and soups to breads and desserts. This edition is destined to become a classic and would certainly make a welcome gift for the new bride as well as the seasoned chef. We especially like that there is a good mix of older classic recipes with more contemporary ones, as well as a good spread of easy to more challenging to prepare suggestions.

An enjoyable book. It contains recipes for herbal waters, honey, vinegars, oils, cordials, pesto, facial masks, bath and foot soaks and more using common kitchen herbs and spices. Most of the recipes are easy and don't use exotic ingredients but items you already have in your spice rack. The front portion of the book contains a materia medica describing the properties of 50 healing herbs and spices--listing how they're used and even how to grow them in your garden. This book will help you to return health and nurturing back to to your family from the comfort of your kitchen. My family is going to be treated to gifts of inspired blackberry cordials this holiday season!
