(More customer reviews)Even though I enjoy books on gardening and cooking from the garden, I almost passed this book over because it was a bit too big and too thick and consequently quite heavy. After I decided to look through it (after all, who can pass up a book with a beautiful cover) I just had to have it. The price helped. I never found out what the original retail price was but got it on sale at one of my local booksellers' sales tables.
Athough there are some veggies and fruits in this book that I cannot grow here (In Hawaii), it still covers a lot more that I can grow. From selecting the spot to plant, how to plant, cultivate, trim, prune, soil management, havesting and storing fruit and vegetables and then cooking.......it covers the whole gamut of organic growing and enjoying by cooking with the fruit of your labor.
Each section is very detailed and even a novice gardener/cook shouldn't have any troubles. The sections detailing the fruits, herbs and vegetables show pictures of each, lots of pertinent information and explanations on each, preparation, etc. It even gives information on certain veggies that we might see in the stores but are not familiar with and how to prepare, cook or eat them!
It also includes a section on what they call 'sea vegetables' - the nori used in sushi or some of the different seaweeds used in cooking. There is a small section on meat, poultry and game and another on fish and shelfish. Grains and dairy products are also covered.
The fruit section covers from apples and pears, through berries and other fruit on to tropicals like mango, kiwi, pineapple and bananas.
The first recipe I tried from this book was "Summer Berries in Warm Sabayon Glaze" on page 383 - I made a few changes to accomodate fruit in season in my area at this time
