(More customer reviews)The best compliment once could receive with this cookbook, ostensibly written for novice cooks, was one I received the other day, after encouraging an elderly friend to buy the book. She bought it for her granddaughter, but decided to try it out first. The comments/compliments focused on the easiness of the recipes, the great food produced, and the attractive and easy to use format. My friend had to buy another copy for herself because she wanted a copy too! I agree on all counts - the book flows easily, the text is amusing and easy to follow, the food is delicious, and Max and Eli really like food and try to impart that to the reader. I have tried three recipes already, and even for a seasoned cook, the recipes are spot-on. This cookbook ios not your typical "novice cook" book, but one that appeals to any age, any background and level of cook, and some of the food stories are very funny. Highly recommended!!

There are a wide variety of recipes, and the ingredients are geared towards a budget-conscious cook with a grocery store not particularly well-stocked in ethnic foods. It's not a beginner's cookbook--my younger sister was a bit intimidated by it--but all the terms are explained and there is a very good section on what utensils and appliances every good kitchen should have.

(More customer reviews)I'm just an average thirtysomething, juggling a career, social life, and mad video game habit. Cooking isn't all that high on my list of priorities, but eating out 5-8 times a week is getting boring and expensive. This book is absolutely perfect if you're like me. The recipes are easy to follow, relatively quick to make, and use inexpensive everyday ingredients. Don't let the simplicity of the recipes fool you, though, the food tastes fantastic!
There's a good amount of pictures and charts to help you with things like how to slice every kind of vegetable, carving poultry, and demystifying how to use different cuts of beef.
I found this book to be an absolute lifesaver and has made me less intimidated about trying new things in the kitchen or tackling some gnarly hardcore recipe.
Although this book appears to be geared towards mothers who will pack this book off with their sons/daughters going off to college, I would highly recommend it to anyone who's just starting out in learning culinary skills, or like me, someone who just wants some simple, easy, great tasting food!

Help My Apartment Has a Kitchen Cookbook: 100 + Great Recipes with Foolproof Instructions Review

(More customer reviews)When I first moved into my apartment in college, this book is one my Mom got for me. She bought it as a joke, but it was a good idea to get my confidence up in the kitchen.
Most of the recipes are fairly easy to do, although some can be a little more challenging. If you're looking to make something quick and don't want to slave over a stove all night, there are all kinds of great quick recipes in there.
However, one major complaint I have is that it seems like many recipes call for an unbelievable amount of oil if you follow the directions to the letter. In some cases, like pancakes, this isn't a problem. In other cases, though, it can really make things tricky, or just plain disgusting.
If you're just starting out in the kitchen, though, you can get a feel for some basics and build your confidence. Just keep your eyes open and you'll get a better feel of how to tweak these recipies for the better -- and before long you'll graduate to "regular" cookbooks.
