European Style Kitchen Designs Review

I bought this book hoping it would provide some design ideas - I am a Cajun cook who is rebuilding the kitchen in my post-Katrina flooded house in New Orleans. The book resembles nothing like the kitchens I've used in France. Rather, the effect is California chic, with very traditionally American cabinetry, marble and granite countertops, "islands" in the middle, and so forth. The sources given in the back of the book are nothing more than a list of American companies in the business of selling high-end domestic kitchen cabinetry and so forth. The words "inspired by" are the dead giveaway that this is not the real thing, and has no value in actual planning for a traditional cook. The photography is very nice. If you enjoy flipping through contemporary design magazines, and you have no interest in really cooking but want a domestic-only kitchen "showplace," maybe you will enjoy this book. Past that, don't bother.

Explore the rich heritage Old Europe has offered for designers of today's high-end kitchens. Enjoy rooms replete with details carefully drawn from stately homes in the Mediterranean hill towns of Provence and Tuscany, the Moorish influences of Spanish Haciendas, the elegance and extravagances of Parisian apartments, and the time-honored traditions of panelled estates of Britain. The appliances may be professional grade stainless steel, yet the hand-carved wooden corbels, wrought-iron fixtures, and the stone-cobbled floors evoke a heritage hundreds of years in the making. This luscious collection of nearly 200 images takes designers and homeowners on an inspiring tour of over 100 kitchens that will inspire your journey to import the old world's long-lasting charms and elegance into your own home.

Old World Kitchens and Bathrooms: A Design Guide Review

Old World Kitchens and Bathrooms: A Design Guide

This is the biggest rip off book of all time. Basically a collection of Kraftmaid and other cabinet manufacturers brochures put together into a book. These are the materials that you can get for free at any home remodel center or from the manufacturers directly when you are planning a remodel. As most of those brochures tend to be, the book is uninspiring and completely unoriginal. All the layouts are too "staged" and don't look real probably because most of them are showroom designs with zero real life feel.Pompous designs without real charm ,in other words.
Worse I purchased it becaused it mentioned bathrooms, my area of interst at the moment - turns out the book only has 15 out of 110 pages covering bathrooms.

French Country Kitchen: The Undiscovered Glories of French Regional Cuisine Review

French Country Kitchen: The Undiscovered Glories of French Regional Cuisine

In the French Country Kitchen, James Villas goes beyond the basic French items known to Americans as French food, and further explores the true essence of French cooking in France.
The introduction delves into the amazing French Paradox, the question of how the French eat suchheavy food, yet have half the rate of heart problems of Americans.
And the recipes in Mr. Villas' masterpiece are also just as interesting. I found the recipes to be very informative, and most were preceded by a humorous or thought provoking anecdote about the French countryside. Each recipe also informs the reader what part of France the particular recipe is from, such as Provence, Flanders, or Alsace.
The recipes are all delicious, and most are relatively easy to prepare as well, contrary to popular belief that French cooking is extremely difficult.
In addition to all the wonderful recipies, Mr. Villas also includes a chapter about bread, and the salade verte, both of which are very important in France. This book is truly interesting, even for someone who dosen't cook. It is worth reading just for the parts about French culture, as well as for the recipies. Bon Appetit

I am thrilled that this is not yet another showcase of photos of kitchens in France, rather this book shows you numerous country french kitchens that are authentic and absolutely true to the style, yet there is no sacrificing of practicality. The book stands on its own if you just want to see beautiful and inspiring kitchens or just like french country style, but goes the extra step for readers who want to see how the style can be creatively adapted to kitchens in which real people actually cook, entertain and congregate with their families here and now in the US. I also was impressed by the quality of presentation and photographic excellence.
