This is a beautiful book! It is chock full of wonderful photographs that do a nice job of showing the reader the many choices available when one renovates a kitchen. The book is well laid out, separated into the different sections of the kitchen. In all, this is a fine guide to what's possible in a contemporary kitchen. I wish this book had been available before I did my kitchen. I have recommended this book to many friends who are considering redoing their kitchens.

The Kitchen Consultant: a common-sense guide to kitchen remodeling Review

The Kitchen Consultant: a common-sense guide to kitchen remodeling
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Over the past two years, my wife has purchased about every kitchen remodeling book there is (at least a dozen) and I've read every one. "The Kitchen Consultant" is clearly the best of the bunch if you're looking for practical, useful information about the many options and decisions that come with kitchen remodeling.
This book is NOT a kitchen design book and it is NOT loaded with beautiful kitchen photos (there are some drawings), and it is NOT a do-it-yourself remodeling manual, but it does what none of those kinds of books (at least that I've seen) do---it clearly explains how to find and work with a good kitchen designer, how to find, evaluate and work with a professional remodeler, and how to make informed choices about things like lighting, ventilation, cabinets, countertops, sinks, flooring, and appliances (there are chapters on each of those categories).
This book is obviously written by someone who knows his subject intimately (the author is a professional kitchen remodeler with 20 years of experience) and is able to present all the information it in a clear, organized, and easy to read manner.
Reading this book is like having a friend who is an experienced contractor come over and help you not only sort out all your options, but also give you his professional opinion and point out some things you may not have considered, but should.
The Kitchen Consultant helped us to make a lot of decisions. For example, it settled a long standing dispute my wife and I have had about the kind of refridgerator we should buy.

Big Designs for Small Kitchens Review

Big Designs for Small Kitchens

Photos from different angles of a few kitchen never used to prepare a dinner for more than two people [if that].
Very, very little copy on the photos.
No layouts.
Somewhere in the past some ideas shown may have been good as Epcot Center displays but not even applicable to a single person's basic loft needs today.
Somebody got carried away with themselves when this book was published.

The Way We Cook: Recipes from the New American Kitchen Review

The Way We Cook: Recipes from the New American Kitchen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a cook who needs a recipe. No experience at my mother's knee. (She worked.) At long last here is a cookbook of recipes that are not too complicated but that have a certain flair. They are, I would say, uncommon but uncomplicated. The onion tart, for instance, consists of onions and thyme, with a dollop of sour cream in its crust. Simple, yes; devoured by my guests, yes. I suggest one should read it through first, for the introduction and the chapter headings are very informative and present the authors' wonderful philospohy that the home cook should not try to duplicate restaurant presentations. This is a cookbook that informs, encourages, promises -- and delivers. Trust me, you will enjoy this cookbook. You can, with this collection of recipes, relax and enjoy cooking for family and for discerning guests. Julia, Silver Palate, and Joy will remain on my shelves, but "The Way We Cook" will remain on my counter!

European Style Kitchen Designs Review

European Style Kitchen Designs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book hoping it would provide some design ideas - I am a Cajun cook who is rebuilding the kitchen in my post-Katrina flooded house in New Orleans. The book resembles nothing like the kitchens I've used in France. Rather, the effect is California chic, with very traditionally American cabinetry, marble and granite countertops, "islands" in the middle, and so forth. The sources given in the back of the book are nothing more than a list of American companies in the business of selling high-end domestic kitchen cabinetry and so forth. The words "inspired by" are the dead giveaway that this is not the real thing, and has no value in actual planning for a traditional cook. The photography is very nice. If you enjoy flipping through contemporary design magazines, and you have no interest in really cooking but want a domestic-only kitchen "showplace," maybe you will enjoy this book. Past that, don't bother.

Explore the rich heritage Old Europe has offered for designers of today's high-end kitchens. Enjoy rooms replete with details carefully drawn from stately homes in the Mediterranean hill towns of Provence and Tuscany, the Moorish influences of Spanish Haciendas, the elegance and extravagances of Parisian apartments, and the time-honored traditions of panelled estates of Britain. The appliances may be professional grade stainless steel, yet the hand-carved wooden corbels, wrought-iron fixtures, and the stone-cobbled floors evoke a heritage hundreds of years in the making. This luscious collection of nearly 200 images takes designers and homeowners on an inspiring tour of over 100 kitchens that will inspire your journey to import the old world's long-lasting charms and elegance into your own home.

Memories of a Midwestern Farm: Good Food & Inspiration from Around Kitchen Table Review

Memories of a Midwestern Farm: Good Food and Inspiration from Around Kitchen Table
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My grandmother was the best cook in the world. Thanks to this cookbook, I now know how she made those great lumpy mashed potatoes and homemade-tasting green beans and... It's too bad terms like "homemade" and "country" have been overworked by Madison Avenue types because those adjectives apply perfectly here. It's all good, but it's not all healthy fare. In fact, I eat pretty "clean" throughout the week but on my "free" day, this is the cookbook I reach for. The only drawback is the ingredients are not listed separately with the recipes. That can become a bit problematic for a person like me, when the stove is blazing and you've got three things going at the same time and you forgot how many cups of milk the recipe called for. Still, the food always comes out tasting great. Invariably, Hutchens' recipes are the ones asked for by guests. I share the name of the cookbook and its author's identity -- but I don't share the cookbook itself. It's one of the few I would truly miss if it didn't come back.

Organic Kitchen Garden Review

Organic Kitchen Garden
Average Reviews:

As I browsed through this lovely book, I envisioned my own garden brimming with produce. It's a great tool for starting a garden, but also just a wonderful book to look at. The photography is very good and the chapters make total sense.
There is a bit of difference in produce due to the England/America thing, but it doesn't deter from the usefulness of the book. You just won't find the same varietals as what's in the book for some species. An example is in the Potato chapter.
If you're a first time gardener, read this book first and then get started. Going organic from the first shot is the best option for you, your family and for the earth!
All in all, I just love this little book. It's not huge by any means. Just a simple book with great ideas. Nothing fancy. But, that's what Organic Gardening is all about. Simplicity at its finest!

The Kitchen Shrink: Foods and Recipes for a Healthy Mind Review

The Kitchen Shrink: Foods and Recipes for a Healthy Mind
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had to admit that when I first encountered the title of this book, I succumbed to an abiding uneasiness. Who, I thought, knows better than anyone else what constitutes a healthy mind? What if there's some aspect of my brain that varies from the definition? What if I eat what she recommends and end up turning into somebody else? If I am what I eat, shouldn't I change what I eat only with the utmost care?
Further, in matters of nutrition, I am wary. I firmly believe that people do not have opinions on nutrition; they have convictions. Whenever I catch wind of a looming nutritional crusade, I run lest I be targeted as the infidel. There's nothing worse than sitting down to a meal you love and not being able to enjoy it because you're worried about what other people will think.
But Natalie Savona is not the kind of nutritional writer who thinks you should be burnt at the stake for eating burnt steak. She has attracted rather than repelled me with her concentration on the blood sugar/mood connection. In my case, she's preaching to the choir. I remember what all that ice cream used to do to me in my younger days.
The Kitchen Shrink is a beautifully produced, large format book, filled with Savona's food doctrine. Though Savona includes some interesting recipes at the tail end of the book, her writing on the food/mood connection is the gist. She comes to the point quickly. Blood sugar balance isn't the whole story, but it comes first for a reason. We've heard it before (but we can stand to hear it again): the "blood sugar seesaw" puts our bodies through an unnecessary daily workout. It makes our daily stress worse; it is itself stress. Stimulants like alcohol and coffee, sweet, sugary and starchy foods give us temporary highs, then more pervasive, longer lows.
Savona suggests adding certain foods to strengthen the adrenal gland and build up the body's ability to handle stress. "At least three times a week," she writes, "eat pumpkin, sunflower, sesame, hemp, and flax seeds and/or oil-rich fish, such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, tuna, or herring." She follows with predictable advice about choosing fresh foods, then specific advice as to which foods, vitamins and minerals enhance levels of serotonin, dopamine, and other mood maintaining neuro-transmitters. She covers familiar ground in talking about good and bad fats, essential fatty acids, and the virtues of olive oil. But then she has an interesting section I found very useful: a complete strategy to use nutrients to give the body's "waste disposal" systems, like the liver, a needed break. Fiber and water are important here, but we should also avoid processed foods, too much alcohol, too many prescription and over the counter drugs, too much food in general. For the truly motivated, she lays out a complete 21-day body cleansing program.
After a short concession to issues of food sensitivity, Savona moves on to what I consider her most original work, individual sections on how to use food to alleviate specific mind/body complaints. She covers, in turn, energy deficit, premenstrual problems, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), insomnia, binge eating, brain fog, and depression. She indexes her back-of-book recipes to menus designed for each particular problem; for pre-menstrual problems, you'll cut down on salt and perhaps start your day with Savona's "Designer Muesli," an amalgam of oats, barley, rye, wheat germ, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, raisins and dried apricots, with soy milk or yogurt. Can't sleep? Have a "Baby Spinach and Goat Cheese Salad" for dinner, or perhaps "Quinoa With Roast Vegetables." For every mood, there's a menu.
Just as Savona was seeming too much the crusader for my particular taste, she presented me with a side bar, designed to get on my good side, that conceded the value of chocolate in maintaining good mood. She even admits that this "food of the gods" (as the Aztecs originally named it) "has been scientifically shown to have built-in feel-good factors, including mental stimulants such as caffeine and theobromine," as well as the important mineral magnesium. Even though chocolate releases coveted endorphins into the brain, Savona counsels moderation because of its high sugar and fat content. (We all know that with chocolate, moderation is more easily preached than practiced.)
There's plenty of material in The Kitchen Shrink to warrant a purchase, even if you've heard much of it before. The book is truly handsome, suitable for gift giving or displaying on your coffee table. My nutrition conscious sister has already appropriated my first copy.

If you like to try your hand at making goodies at home, this book is for you! The authors give you recipes for making your own liqueurs, flavored vodkas, jellies, jams, cheeses, seasoning mixes, sauces, specialty mustards, exotic desserts, gourmet meats--the list is almost endless!
The recipes are generally easy to follow and use ingredients that are readily available. If special ingredients or equipment are needed, there's a handy guide in the back on where to order these things. And there are explanations that make sense for the more complicated procedures, such as cheese-making and brewing spirits. You're not left to wonder what some term or procedure means!
I've used this book for several years to make Christmas gifts. My friends expect the cordials and liqueurs, as well as the gourmet jams and relishes now! And I've given this book to friends the world over, as well. No one has been disappointed yet by this book. It is a true treasure on my cookbook shelf and shows the splatters of many successful uses.

Kitchens for Cooks: Planning Your Perfect Kitchen Review

Kitchens for Cooks: Planning Your Perfect Kitchen
Average Reviews:

This is truly a book tailored to individuals. Deborah Kraser throws out the convential 36" counter height and magic work triangle and has written a book that is truly for people who cook! The book is divided into two sections, detailed tips on how to plan a kitchen just for you, and examples of kitchens that have used this type of method, including Chefs, Cookbook Authors, Caterers and Avid Cooks. I do not claim to be any of the above, yet I have read this book many times and am still learning from it each time.
To quote from the introduction, "This is not a how-to book. Rather it is a 'how-to-think-about' book designed to provide ideas for creating well-planned and comfortable kitchens. Such personal, well-fitting, and idiosyncratic spaces can only enhance our ability to work well within them."
Since purchasing this book several months ago, I have designed and built my dream kitchen, which functions beautifully and looks great too! "Kitchens for Cooks" is a great book for anyone who spends time in a kitchen, not just cooks!

Excuse the enthusiasm, but Spiffy Kitchen Collectibles is an amazing book. It's accurate, informative and beautiful. And on top of that, it's a hoot. Filled with more than 1,000 full-color pictures of kitchen gadgets of all kinds, the book is part identification guide, part price guide and part stroll down memory lane. Covering Post World War II kitchen ware, the book includes hundreds of period magazine advertisements, helping to put the collectibles in context. Visually, it's brilliant. Some of the pictures are small but that's only because there are so many included. You don't have to be a collector to enjoy this book. But if you are, you'll find the book handier than an Ecko egg beater. Buy it. Read it. Enjoy.
