Holly Clegg's Trim & Terrific Gulf Coast Favorites: Over 250 easy recipes from my Louisiana Kitchen Review

Holly Clegg's Trim and Terrific Gulf Coast Favorites: Over 250 easy recipes from my Louisiana Kitchen

I have used Holly's Trim & Terrific cookbooks for 10 or more years. Her cookbooks are the ones I turn to over and over because when it comes down to it, I usually need something quick, easy, with ingredients I have at home and most importantly, something my family will gobble up. I believe I could put anything in front of my 12 year old son and tell him it was from Holly's cookbook and he would dig in and love every bite. He says she is the best cooker ever.
Gulf Coast Favorites - continues her tradition of fabulous tasting recipes that are quick & anyone can prepare them. Oh and the 'trim' part is a plus too. I like these southern & Cajun inspired dishes since we are from the south - these are recipes we are familiar with and love.
Thanks again Holly....Sheila

I absolutely love this book. I collect cookbooks and have an extensive collection from around the world and this is by far one of my favorites. The author traces her heritage through story and food from Africa through the West Indies, the Carribean and the southern plantations of the U.S. This is a book not too be missed. It is a shame it is no longer in hardcover because I just loaned mine out and never got it back. Anyone who likes good food needs this book!

What Southern Women Know about Faith: Kitchen Table Stories and Back Porch Comfort Review

What Southern Women Know about Faith: Kitchen Table Stories and Back Porch Comfort

What a wonderful blessing it was to listen to the audio version of this book which is actually narrated by Ronda Rich. With her stunning Southern voice, she speaks of both happy and sorrowful times which will tug at your heart causing tears to flow, but a smile to catch them. Ronda's words brought back so many memories including spending weekends and summers with my now deceased Grandparents in North Georgia, Camp Meetings and Sunday "dinners" with friends and relatives. This book makes me cherish even more my upbringing, my family and having such a sweet Lord to praise and watch over me and the people I love so dearly. Thank you Ronda for something so beautiful and truly unforgettable.

Damon Lee Fowler's New Southern Kitchen: Traditional Flavors for Contemporary Cooks Review

Damon Lee Fowler's New Southern Kitchen: Traditional Flavors for Contemporary Cooks

I am really impressed with this book. The author truly has zest for life, knows his subject as a professional who understands differences between cooking at a restaurant and in a modern kitchen, and has a great sense of humor. I have tried a number of recipes, found them quite easy to follow, and the results came out from very good to excellent to exceed expectations. All of the dishes that I produced in my small kitchen following the author's directions had just as much character as the author seems to have :), and none of the recipes seemed intimidating or unreasonably demanding. It was also a pleasure to read all the stories coming with the cuisine and people who sustain it.

I bought this book because I know both the arthor and the illustrator personally, and not only wanted to support them but to see what kind of work it was. I was somewhat disappointed, the book seemed a little too personal and not a real indepth study of Cross Creek Cooking.

Dishing with the Kitchen Virgin Review

Dishing with the Kitchen Virgin
Average Reviews:

I was thrilled to see a new book by Susan. Even though I know my way around a Cuisinart, I can certainly relate to her wacky culinary mishaps and last minute improvisations. Her concoctions and calamities crack me up, and remind me fondly of growing up in the South and the surprises awaiting us at the dinner table. Reinhardt's recipe for humor always leave me wanting more. What a gem she is!

"She's like a modern-day, southern-fried Erma Bombeck or Dave Barry." --BooklistIs the brand sticker still affixed to your sauté pan? Is your wok used solely as a receptacle for potato chips?Does your blender only see the light of day when Baccardi or Tequila is involved? If so, then welcome to the Kitchen Virgin Club. But don't despair--you're in the illustrious company of Susan Reinhardt: syndicated columnist, spokeswoman for skewed southern bellehood...and one truly lousy cook. In this cleaver-sharp new collection of food stories, culinary missteps, and recipes from yummy to yucky, Reinhardt comes clean--way clean--as the unapologetic product of a long line of talented, fascinating, funny women who have regular brushes with homicide by pot roast. From "The Toaster Oven is a Bee-otch" to "When Road Kill Makes it to Mikasa," as well as the titular tale of the socialite who shaved her fuzzy greens, these stranger-than-fiction accounts will have you laughing until milk spews out of your nose. And for those inspired to graduate from Kitchen Virgin to Kitchen 'Tute, there's "Bone Apple Cheat!"-- Reinhardt's own shortcut-to-real-food recipes. So next time you're tempted to make Taco Bell your last (okay, first) resort, crack open this book, have a laugh...and get cookin'. "So engaging...so honest...will make you laugh out loud." --The Asheville Citizen-Times"Like hanging out with your bluntest, most mischievous friend, the one who never fails to crack you up." --Chicago Sun-Times"Funny and touching...Reinhardt is not afraid to put it all out there." --The Pilot (N.C.) "Susan Reinhardt takes the naked, honest truth and sets it on fire in a blaze of laughter... will have you holding your sides the whole time." --Laurie Notaro, Autobiography of a Fat Girl"She can break your heart in one sentence and leave you laughing till you're breathless in the next." --Julie Cannon, True Love & Homegrown Tomatoes

Atlanta has some of the finest cuisine served up by some of the finest restaurants in all of Georgia. In "Atlanta Kitchens", cookbook author and restaurant critic Krista Reese draws upon her more than twenty years of covering Atlanta's finest dining establishments ranging from down home cafes to elegant restaurants, to showcase fifty-six of Atlanta's finest ranging from Watershed, Mary Mac's Tea Room, and Babette's Cafe, to The Pecan; Gravity Pub, and the Horseradish Grill. Profusely illustrated, the step-by-step recipes run the complete dining gamut from appetizers to entrees, from side dishes to salads, from desserts to beverages. Of special note is the chapter entirely dedicated to 'Comfort Foods' as offered by some of Atlanta's most impressive chefs. From Strawberry Serrano Mussels (Babette's Cafe); to Butter-Poached Shrimp and Grits (Repast); to Pulled Pork BBQ on Cornmeal Pancakes with Spicy Mustard Coleslaw (Horseradish Grill); to Orange Buttermilk Chess Pie (South City Kitchen), "Atlanta Kitchens" offers thoroughly 'kitchen cook friendly', palate pleasing, appetite satisfying, gourmet quality dishes that would grace any dining occasion and bring some of that memorable Atlanta quality restaurant cuisine to the family table.

Tupelo Honey Cafe: Spirited Recipes from Asheville's New South Kitchen Review

Tupelo Honey Cafe: Spirited Recipes from Asheville's New South Kitchen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Whenever we visit Asheville, which is about an hour away from my home, we always make a point to eat at Tupelo Honey Cafe. It's honestly well worth the drive even if we don't do anything else in town. The food has always been spectacular, using fresh local ingredients, and the atmosphere in the restaurant is soothing and uplifting.I've tried to duplicate some of their recipes at home, coming close with my grit cakes. I was so excited when I heard they were publishing a cookbook and I pre-ordered it from Amazon.
This cookbook has far exceeded my expectations! First, it's a beautiful cookbook just to look through. There are many color photographs of the local area, the restaurant, and of course the delicious meals. But the recipes - oh my goodness!
I love the salad they serve at the cafe and one simple but amazing component would be the sweet pickled onions. I assumed they purchased them, but now I know they make them and now I can, too! The salad dressings are far from ordinary. I've already tried the Pecan Vinaigrette and it's addictive! I'll soon try the Smoked Tomato Vinaigrette and will use their technique for oven smoking the tomatoes. I've used my stove top smoker to smoke tomatoes in the past, but their oven technique sounds like it makes more sense.
The recipes in every section of this cookbook are just as amazing. You'll find southern classics with an upscale twist. Mac and Cheese Casserole with Goulda. Fried Green Tomato and Grilled Portobello Sandwich with Basil Roasted Red Pepper Mayonnaise. Chicken Apple Meat Loaf with Tarragon Tomato Gravy. You'll just faint when you see the recipe for Tomato Pie! And of course the day won't be complete without a slice of Chocolate Pecan Pie.
This is my new favorite cookbook and I can't recommend it highly enough. The recipes make use of the freshest ingredients - nothing fancy or hard to find - and are easy to follow. You don't have to be a chef to prepare them. I'm having so much fun with it, and am giving a copy to Mom for Mothers Day!

As an early pioneer in the farm-to-fork movement, chef Brian Sonoskus has been creating delicious dishes at the Tupelo Honey Cafe in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, since it first opened in 2000. And from then on, Tupelo's food has been consistently fresh, made from scratch, sassy, and scrumptious.Heralding in its own unique style of cuisine representative of the New South, the Tupelo Honey Cafe salutes the love of Southern traditions at the table, but like the people of Asheville, marches to its own drum. The result is a cookbook collection of more than 125 innovative riffs on Southern favorites, illustrated with four-color photographs of the food, restaurant, locals, farmers' markets, and farms, in addition to black-and-white archival photography of Asheville. At Tupelo, grits become Goat Cheese Grits, fried chicken becomes Nutty Fried Chicken with Mashed Sweet Potatoes, and poached eggs become Eggs with Homemade Crab Cakes and Lemon Hollandaise Sauce.Capturing the independent and creative spirit of Asheville, Tupelo has garnered praise from the New York Times, Southern Living, and the Food Network, just to name a few.

Paula Deen's Kitchen Classics: The Lady & Sons Savannah Country Cookbook and The Lady & Sons, Too Review

Paula Deen's Kitchen Classics: The Lady and Sons Savannah Country Cookbook and The Lady and Sons, Too
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
'Paula Deen's Kitchen Classics' combines between one pair of covers, all the material in her earlier 'The Lady and Sons' cookboods, but not including her desserts book. I give this volume only three stars as a warning to all readers who already own one or both of Ms. Deen's earlier works. I may have been just a bit more generous if the editors had merged the two books' recipe by type, but they simply smacked the two books together with no matching up soups with soups and veggies with veggies and so on.
I am also sort of fond of the earlier publications, as they have the classic 'church cookbook' binding which neatly lays flat on the table as you have both hands full with spatula and measuring spoon.
So, let the buyer beware of this REPRINT! To Paula's credit, she is not hiding this fact, but, as with Mark Bittman's reprinted volumes, it is easy to be too eager for a new volume from a favorite author and leap before looking.
