I absolutely love this book. I collect cookbooks and have an extensive collection from around the world and this is by far one of my favorites. The author traces her heritage through story and food from Africa through the West Indies, the Carribean and the southern plantations of the U.S. This is a book not too be missed. It is a shame it is no longer in hardcover because I just loaned mine out and never got it back. Anyone who likes good food needs this book!

Shuck Beans, Stack Cakes, and Honest Fried Chicken: The Heart and Soul of Southern Country Kitchens Review

There are so many Southern cookbooks out now, but this one is a keeper. Some of the books available are written either by those who haven't 'walked the walk' or who have tried updating or otherwise modifying the food we grew up with and loved.
No so Ms. Lundy. She gives us the real thing, take it or leave it, with recipes from her own cooking experience. No, not all of these recipes are 'health food' in today's atmosphere of cooking-political correctness. However, these recipes need no apology. As Julia Child has always said, eat everything wisely and in moderation and you won't go wrong. I'd classify much of this book as comfort food, and besides, stress is killing more of our baby-boomer generation than food ever could!
Interspersed with her recipes are delightful recollections, many of well known personalities.
Buy this book and enjoy her writing as well as her recipes!

Here is the first regional American cookbook to offer a true taste of the Mountain South. This unique cookbook gathers together more than 180 authentic down-home southern recipes -- full-flavored, no-nonsense dishes more and more Americans are returning to -- and leavens them with memories of food, family, and friendship from some of country music's most beloved performers. "Take a chicken and you kill it/And you put it in a skillet/And you fry it 'til it's golden-brown./That's southern cooking and it tastes mighty nice." -- "Kentucky Means Paradise" by Merle Travis "Straight from the heart and soul of southern cooking. It's a banquet, with background music." -- John Egerton, author of Southern Food; "Simple, honest cooking of the Mountain South. . . . A fresh, entertaining approach to food." -- Atlanta Constitution; "Reeks with authenticity." -- Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Mama Dip's Kitchen Review

I bought this book for my wife whose been looking for a cobbler receipe. Not only did this give us an excellent cobbler but fantastic receipes for all sorts of southern dishes. My wife is not originally from the South and wanted the "secrets" to good southern cooking. Mama Dip has provided her with some of these secrets.
In addition to the receipies, the story of Mama Dip's life was inspiring. It gives us a glimpse into the life of a poor southern family. The book is worth buying for this story alone.
I'm anxiously awaiting additional titles from her!

I have had this book for just three days but I jumped at the chance to try it out yesterday and what a find! I made the black eyed peas fritters with the recommended hot sauce, the succotash soup with garlicky cornbread croutons, and molasses ice cream with candied walnuts. While, admittedly, it took all night since each ingredient requires from-scratch making (I cheated with canned black-eyed peas), it was well worth it. Everything was just perfect. I would like to clarify something in case others have some confusion regarding the succotash soup, I didn't see the step where you drain the bean mixture after cooking and before pureeing but I am sure that is what is meant. I think most people would notice that 10 cups of water would make for a very liquid-y soup, but some wouldn't know this until it was too late and I would hate for that to happen! Also, I only used a couple of tablespoons of coconut "oil" because it was so expensive ($9 for a small jar), and make my fritters in the shape of small medallions so that I could flip them in the shallow oil and it worked just fine. This is a collection I'd recommend to vegans and non-vegans alike.
