Delicious and easy dishes to make. Solomon did a fine job in preparing this diverse cookbook. I sometimes take my copy to the market and sees what veggies are in season/look best. A must for every vegetarian and smart eater.

The Complete Vegan Cookbook: Over 200 Tantalizing Recipes, Plus Plenty of Kitchen Wisdom for Beginners and Experienced Cooks

I've found the recipes in this book to be, on average, very good to excellent. Many recipes are made entirely from vegetables you can get at the local farmers market. Dependance on soy and soy derivatives is (refreshingly) minimized. This book focuses more on wonderful and delicious recipes made from vegetable instead of trying to imitate or substitute for the usual meat and cheese dishes. No need to special order ingredients from Venezuela or the Ivory Coast either. I found this book approachable, practical, and with recipes that can fit into any meal, vegan or not. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in cooking with vegetables.

Hippie Kitchen: A Measurefree Vegetarian Cookbook (Measurefree Cookbook Trilogy) Review

Hippie Kitchen: A Measurefree Vegetarian Cookbook (Measurefree Cookbook Trilogy)

I discovered Jean Johnson, The Hippie Cook, on Facebook and enjoyed her rockin' & rollin' cooking style so much I bought both of her cook books. Cooking Beyond Measure and The Hippie Kitchen show how easy it is to cook fresh, seasonal vegetable dishes that are delicious and affordable with little to no measuring. You don't have or like an ingredient? Not a problem, Jean encourages you to use the ingredients you have on hand and gives you the freedom and courage to be creative with her recipes. My kitchen will never be the same.

Hippie Kitchen is set clearly in the new model of kitchen companion cookbooks. Rather than a compendium of paint-by-numbers recipes it offers inspiration, enthusiasm, and tips.

That's because we're increasingly going to the internet for dinner recipes. So now, instead of cookbooks filled with recipe after recipe, we want cooking books, friendly kitchen companions, that will entice us back into our kitchens.

"We'd probably cook more," says author and food historian Jean Johnson, "if it wasn't a paint-by-numbers exercise. And why should the elite cooking authorities get to have all the fun? This is simple everyday food. The same delicious food women around the world have been making for centuries-food that's light years beyond brown rice. And it's easy. You start with an idea and pretty soon you're rocking & rolling."

Laced with rock & roll lyrics, Hippie Kitchen: A Measurefree Vegetarian Cookbook is the second title in Johnson's measurefree cookbook trilogy. The first book, Cooking Beyond Measure: How to Eat Well without Formal Recipes came out in 2008.

The Milk-Free Kitchen: Living Well Without Dairy Products Review

The Milk-Free Kitchen: Living Well Without Dairy Products

As a mother of a child who has recently been diagnosed with milk allergy, I found this book disappointing. Prior to it's purchase, I had spent a considerable amount of time in health food stores becoming familiar with all the substitutes there are for milk - such as rice "milk", soy products, etc.. None of these are used in this book. As the author admits, this book focuses on what a person can eat. Most of these receipes are food dishes that just about anyone who has cooked before would already know can be prepared without milk. For those not so obvious, the author only substitutes water in the place of milk. I could have just as easily look up these receipes in a regular cook book. What I really needed was something that helps me create dishes for my daughter that she loves, but that she can no longer have due to her allergy. What I found most helpful was the section on cheese and have since started giving my daughter goat cheese products to see if she can tolerate this.
To anyone in search of good milk-free receipes, I suggest writing to or going to the web site of those companies who make products to replace dairy, such as soy, rice, almond, and other multi-gran products. They have really saved me.

One of the first vegan cookbooks I purchased several years ago, and have turned to frequently over the years, is Very Vegetarian (currently available new and used from Amazon), also by Jannequin Bennett - executive chef of TJ's restaurant in Richmond Virginia's 5-star Jefferson Motel. It is an attractive, well-written collection of over 300 plant-based recipes that I have enjoyed perusing as well as using. For those new to vegan cooking, Ms. Bennett's book contains helpful supplemental material introducing what may be unfamiliar ingredients, the recipes are extraordinarily well-written, and 16 color-plates throughout the book help one picture just how enticingly vegan food can be presented. Most importantly, recipes I have tried have been delicious and well received by my family! Naturally, I was excited to see that Ms. Bennett had a "new" collection out this year. What a disappointment to discover that THE COMPLETE VEGAN KITCHEN IS A RETITLED, PAPERBACK EDITION OF HER PREVIOUS BOOK. If I didn't already own the hardback edition, this would have been an exciting new addition to my now extensive collection of vegan cookbooks. It has the same interesting foreword by Olympic Athlete of the Century, Carl Lewis, all the same wonderful recipes, and is illustrated with the same beautiful photos - just presented in a colorful paperpack cover this time around. If you don't already own Very Vegetarian, I highly recommend The Complete Vegan Kitchen.Very Vegetarian

A vegan diet-one without any animal products-is unusually healthy because it is high in fiber, low in saturated fat, and very nutritious. Nine-time Olympic gold medal winner Carl Lewis says, "My best year of track competition was the first year I ate a vegan diet. . . . My weight is under control, I like the way I look, I enjoy eating more, and I feel great."

The Complete Vegan Kitchen is "one of the best vegan cookbooks I have read," said famousveggie.com. For the person just beginning to chose meatless meals, it provides information on choosing a vegan diet, nutritional information, and recipes with familiar foods and techniques. "The powerful nutrition information in the first forty pages is worth the price of the book!" says Dr. Neal D. Barnard. However, for the person more experienced with a plant-based, diet, it provides recipes that will broaden their culinary horizon.
