Mommy Millionaire: How I Turned My Kitchen Table Idea into a Million Dollars and How You Can, Too

I always thought the idea of owning a business would be great. I've dabbled on Ebay, with the whole intent being to stay at home and raise my kids while making money on the side. When I saw the title of this book it inspired me....maybe if I read it I could find some inspiration to start a business myself?
While the book itself is a good read (I didn't want to put it down!) I found the author's tenacity a bit scary. The product itself has limited potential....like a previous poster said, it's a fad product. Once everyone owns one, your income potential has pretty much dried up. The author fought really hard to make her business succeed by begging and borrowing, often at great personal risk. She often sacrificed time spent with family in her quest to make her business succeed. This to me represents the biggest conflict in her quest....the title "Mommy Millionaires" implies that this is something a Mommy can do "in her spare time" or when she isn't caring for her children. When in fact after reading this book I am more apt to believe the author traded in her time with her children FOR the business.....she even speaks about missing her children's birthday parties because she was too busy trying to promote her business.
I give this book 2 stars because it is a good read....but it misses its mark as an inspiration for other "mompreneurs". There are plenty of families out there who can successfully manage family and business. Moms shouldn't have to choose!

Pure Pleasures: Luscious Live Food Recipes from the Glowing Temple Kitchen Review

Pure Pleasures: Luscious Live Food Recipes from the Glowing Temple Kitchen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Natalia's _Pure Pleasures_ is as much a love story as it is a recipe book. Each page glows with the love she puts into her creations and the joy she gets out of them. And, luckily, we all get to share in the pleasures of this sweet, savory, and sometimes spicy, luscious love affair with living foods. :)
This recipe book is by far one of the most elegant, down-to-earth, well-organized, and easy-to-follow ones that I have come across in the raw food realm. (And, as a raw food enthusiast, I've been through my fair share!) The book is divided into ten sections (introduction, drinks, breakfasts, "small bites," salads, sauces, meals, treats, cakes, and resources), and each of these sections has a fun and personal introduction with mouth-watering, clear, and deliciously amazing recipes to follow. The recipes are as enjoyable to read and make as they are to eat! The best thing about Natalia's recipes (well, aside from the ultimate healthiness and superb taste factors) is that they use simple and basic ingredients, and not ones that require you to become a detective to find!
I also appreciated some of the more subtle details of her book. For example, each recipe has a consistent and organized presentation: creative title, personalized description, individualized recipe list for each component of the dish, detailed and clear instructions for preparing each of these individual components, instructions on how to assemble each of the components together, and an mmmm-inspiring, close-up glamor shot of the finished natural yumminess. And, the consistent color-coding throughout the book was natural candy for my, uh, organizational passions.
Pure Pleasures is such a fitting name for this book: in addition to providing recipes for the most pleasurable living foods, it's a pure pleasure to page through and read.
Bring on the luscious living love!

This is a cookbook. That's it. Now, what is so bad about that? When I got this book I thought it would be more of a party-planning book, such as Christopher Lowell's: themes, and dishes to go with the themes. But it's not. It's just a book telling about how she likes to cook with her kids and other families, the fact that she is a Food Network producer and trained chef, and all the places she has lived in. The dishes are arranged the usual way: appetizers, mains, desserts, etc. There are maybe four-themed "parties," and all she does is reference the page numbers of the recipes, and several themes use the exact same recipes for each!
Now tell me something: would your kids eat dishes like
pickled shrimp with mango and fennel? (and would you serve shrimp to a crowd of people, kids included?)
duck and andouille jambalaya? (and once again, would you serve duck to a crowd, only to be thrown out and wasted by the children?)
grilled lobsters with garlic butter? (um, yeah, what part of this are the children going to be able to do? Grilling around children? My idea of a supervision nightmare.)
This is a beautiful cookbook full of color photos and beautiful graphic design (not a photo for each dish, however). And there are some kid-friendly recipes, like Spaghetti carbonara and Parmesan chicken fingers. But do you need a kids' cookbook for that? Your standard Betty Crocker cookbook has these recipes, I'm sure.
This is a fun idea, and cooking with your kids is wonderful. But this is not marketed correctly. If you're going to cook with $40 ingredients, don't try it out on your kids or others' kids. Let them Try your entree at a restaurant and THEN make it at home.

I Like Food, Food Tastes Good: In the Kitchen with Your Favorite Bands Review

I Like Food, Food Tastes Good: In the Kitchen with Your Favorite Bands
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"I Like Food, Food Tastes Good: In the Kitchen with your Favorite Bands" is an indie-rock cookbook that features recipes from groups like the Violent Femmes, They Might Be Giants, Calexico and Death Cab For Cutie. (These four bands also happen to be the only contributors I'd heard of, but people much cooler than I will likely recognize the other musicians.) The 105 recipes in this book are varied and range from "Big Apple Quiche Muffins" in the "Breakfast" chapter to "Wild Boar Ragu" in the "Main Courses for Carnivores" chapter. I've had the book for a little over two weeks and have made an adapted version of the "Asian Stir-Fry for Vegetarians Who Hate Vegetables," the oatmeal cake pictured above, a pear and goat cheese panini, and eggplant parmesan, which I baked instead of frying as the recipe recommends. I was pleased with how these meals turned out and was especially grateful for their "easy on the effort" approach. Other recipes range from down-home comfort food like mac and cheese, to playfully titled drinks like "Patriot Act Mojitos," made with fresh mint, sparkling water, Cuban rum and sugar, among other things. For the health-conscious there are several 'healthy alternative' recipes, for instance, cookies made with powdered green tea and vegan chocolate chip cookies. And for the adventurous, the "Strawberry Pop Cake," which is made with strawberry soda and Jell-O, promises an interesting afternoon in the kitchen. Overall this is a good little cookbook with recipes that can be made when you're short on time and that can easily be modified to suit your tastes. It also begins to answer the question: What do musicians eat when they're on the road?
There are two things about this book that I wasn't too thrilled about. First, a handful of recipes are plagued by some of the worst writing I have ever seen - ever. I understand that the musicians who wrote them are artists and infinitely more hip than I will ever be, but I ask you, who publishes instructions like this: "...add a little bit of cream!! And STIRRRRRR!!!!... SIR LAWRENCE OF ARABIA!... THEN, put it on the frying pan!!!! let it get GOLDEN!!!" I mean, seriously, either this guy was on something or the recipe is so out-of-this-world that T. E. Lawrence came back from the dead to try it. (That's the only way I could get my head round the Arabia connection.) Thankfully recipes like this are few and far between, and the one quoted above, for "Africanitas Ricas," was the worst offender. The only other thing I wasn't too keen on was the inclusion of a recipe for a bologna sandwich, but if part of this book's purpose is bringing the artists to the people then I suppose it isn't so bad. "Rock can get complicated," the text reads, "but this sandwich isn't. Feed to those who are living the dream." I can dig that.
In addition to the aforementioned chapters, sections include: "Soups, Sides and Starters," "Sandwiches," "Main Courses for Vegetarians," "Drinks" and "Desserts." Whatever your musical tastes this book has something for everyone and is worth checking out. And if you happen to be an indie-music lover? All the better.

Scots Kitchen: Its Traditions and Lore with Old-time Recipes

A glorious unveiling of the foundations, history, and trends in Scottish hospitality. Several centuries of provisioning, lardering, cooking and putting to table the staples and sweeties of the Scots. Amply footnoted, historically referenced, culturally defined understandable writing. The pages ooze with atmosphere and one may find themselves reading with a distinct "brough". Really a fine work and clean printing of recipies and history. A must for any modern Scot's, or Irishman's kitchen (careful how you use that word) library.

Entertaining From an Ethnic Indian Kitchen Review

Entertaining From an Ethnic Indian Kitchen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I run a literary website that among other things offers book reviews. We do not consider either self-published or vanity-published books for review in order to manage our in-flow and also to avoid having to toss what are for the most part poorly-written, poorly-printed books. I've seen far too many bad books in my roles as book reviewer, book editor, and now editor-in-chief at different publications to believe that books outside the commercial realm have much to recommend them.
But in April of 2010, when I attended the annual Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, I came across a booth staffed by a single person. This is always the sign of a self-published author and I usually avoid any eye or body contact (because I am wearing a press badge) until I can get past. One booth stopped me, however, and it proved to be the author of this book and her husband. Even from a distance I could see what appeared to be a fabulous cover. (I am also a long-time book design judge for a national contest.)
Upon opening a sample copy, I proceeded to browse, and discovered, to my absolute delight, one of the most fabulous coffee table-style cookbooks (but with a strong, practical bent) I have ever had the privilege of seeing. (You can bet I bought it--and within five minutes of seeing it.) The family had invested in superb photography, excellent cover and interior designers, copy editors and proofreaders--all the complement a woman who really does cook all these dishes and knows how to share her recipes with those unfamiliar with the cuisine.
The book is large, heavy, and the paper used on both the cover and the interior pages is rich and luxurious. It perfectly matches the warm coloration of the photographs and the dishes that often contain a saffron yellow hue. Even the end papers are an extraordinary photograph of the various herbs and spices used in Indian cooking. The title and TOC (Table of Contents) pages are wonderfully designed yet the necessary information is cleanly and clearly presented. The book is divided into the following categories. The Introduction, Elements of Entertaining, and Indian Cuisine parts provide practical information on non-food aspects such as style and design, themes, preparation and planning, invitations, menu, table setting, china and so on. While the author does not insist that you buy special dishes or silver, she does point out that small changes (such as napkins, flowers, or table accessories) are an easy and inexpensive way to change the look of your table.
Her discussion of Indian cuisine is only a couple of pages long, yet in that brief space she manages to elucidate the different food choices for different areas and the reasons why those exist. You'll learn why yogurt, pickles and chutneys are important as are papadams and vadiams (wafers).
She also offers suggestions for twelve different parties (or feasts) ranging from a casual "Snack & Chaat Party" to elegant Christmas and New Year's Eve dinners. Each "party" section begins with opulent pictures showing the setting, food before beginning with the menu itself and the recipes.
Since it is summer as I write this, the Barbecue Party seems appropriate to detail. "While barbecuing is a time-honored tradition in America," she writes, "Punjab is the only region in India where tandoor ovens are used to cook meat and bread outdoors." Sound good? It should. Recipes for her outdoor party include Manog Salsa & Chips, Meyer Lemon Lemonade, Iced Tea with Saffron and Cardomon (I can personally vouch for this!), Pomegranate Margaritas, and Mango Margaritas. Entrees include Barbecued Whole Fish, Lamb Kabobs, Tamarind Glazed Pork Ribs, Tandoori Chicken, Corn Seekh Kabobs, Paneer and Vegetable Kaboks, Grilled Vegetable Chaat, Grilled Spicy Naan. There are two dessert recipes: Kulfi and Spiced Fruit Salad.
One need not (nor would one) make everything, but it is all there. Plus, the recipes are written out extremely well. It begins with the number of servings, then a bulleted list of ingredients in bold), and finally the directions. There is almost always a large, clear photograph of the actual dish so you can see what you are going to get. And the spices are always clearly laid out. If you can make a particular spice like Tamarind Paste, she notes the page on which you will find that recipe.
This book is a kind of hybrid, that is, it is both a sensuous gift book and a practical cookbook. Don't hesitate to take this into the kitchen and get spills on it while making its recipes because those splotches will only enhance the look. If you are an adventurous cook (though you need to have some knowledge it is enough to be a "mid-list level cook) you will love this book. I doubt there is any better.

These days I don't know anybody that isn't trying to save a little money. This book will help families do just that by teaching them how to substitute their "Fast Food" habit with a "Fast Food Kitchen" with the bonus benefit of creating memories around the dinner table with the family.
Sheri has given us tons of tips and along with several delicious recipes in this book. In fact, the recipes are so easy to make that my teenage kids have already cooked several of them and with great success. I think this book is a must have for every busy family and would also make a terrific gift for kids going off to college.
Bravo Sheri! You are helping us rethink how we spend our money and our time.

We sure agree with the other comment about lousy editing. All three of the recipes that we tried had steps omitted. In the Wild Mushroom Soup you reconstitute the dried mushrooms, and add their water, but never actually put the mushrooms in.
In the introduction, they stress to never run the stovetop heat above medium on an enameled dutch oven, but then the recipe says "bring to boil over medium-high heat.
There are some recipes that look good, but we'll double-check them on the Internet before trying them. We were really hoping this would be a great cookbook, but are very disappointed with it. We'll shopping for a replacement.

Today's busy lifestyles make it impractical to plan the kind of multicourse feasts one might wish. An easy and exciting solution is the venerable dutch oven pot. In this follow-up to their successful The Cast Iron Skillet Cookbook, Sharon Kramis and Julie Kramis Hearne show off the many virtues of this kitchen essential. The dutch oven excels at everything from simmering to baking, working equally well on the stovetop and in the oven. The book begins with an informative history of the pot, along with a discussion of various cooking methods. From there it moves into such mouthwatering dishes as Slow Cooked Pork with Smoky Barbeque Sauce and Slaw, Smothered Chicken with Sautéed Morels, Fresh Vegetable Estouffade, Northwest Bouillabaisse, and Ms. Kate's Spoon Bread. Whether using a well-used and blackened garage-sale find, or the latest celery-green item from La Creuset, contemporary chefs can satisfy the most exacting palates with this entertaining cookbook.

The Art of Kitchen Design Review

The Art of Kitchen Design

(More customer reviews)
Nephew of Elizabeth David (the doyenne of English Food writing), and an architect by trade, Grey writes lucidly and cogently about all aspects of kitchen design. The first section of the book is a history of kitchen design through the ages with a good critique of the good and bad aspects of such kitchens. He includes lots of pictures of kitchens he has designed for various types of houses - including those for Elizabeth David (a winter kitchen and a summer kitchen no less) and for these insights alone the book is worth the price. Grey is scathing about built-in kitchens as he feels that, although they help avoid clutter, they are also devoid of humanity and warmth. Grey's kitchen's focus on the Kitchen as the centre of any house - as a place for cooking, entertaining, homework, socialising and generally enjoying your home. Kitchens should for example have lots of places to perch to encourage conversation to develop. The book contains lots of diagrams and pictures as well as some architectural style drawings to illustrate the points made in the text. Most everything you would like to know about kitchens is contained in this book which is well designed and presented. Highly recommended for foodies and home owners everywhere.

Substituting Ingredients: An A to Z Kitchen Reference Review

Substituting Ingredients: An A to Z Kitchen Reference
Average Reviews:

I bought this book hoping that it would come in handy when I realize that I don't have an ingredient on hand and need to make a switch in a pinch.
Though it has lots of substitutions, most are simply switches for ingredients in the same family (yellow onions ---> chives, etc...). Maybe I was expecting too much, but I was hoping that it would cover ingredients substitutions that weren't so obvious.
I would have given it a 4 star rating even so but my biggest problem is that the layout is really poor. Trying to find substitutions for red or white wine are either not in their or not in an order that makes sense to me anyway.
It is handy but not the end all, be all of books. Maybe the 4th edition will be better.

The Asian Kitchen : The Best of Chinese and Far Eastern Cooking

This book is a great example of a useful asian recipe collection. The best aspect of the book is the fact that all of the recipes are well illustrated. Not only is the food itself illustrated, but all the preparation steps are also illustrated making the cooking process very easy. A large number of diverse recipes are included that provide a nice sample of asian cusine. The only disappointment I found was that each recipe stands alone. The recipes are grouped according to type (soups, meat and poultry, etc), but we aren't given any background for any of the dishes; for some we don't even know what country they come from. Still the recipes are all interesting, and easy to make. If all you need is a set of great ideas for asian meals, you'll find this book invaluable. If you're looking for the cultural background for dishes, you'll have to look elsewhere.
