If your looking for a cookbook, this is not the one. If your looking for entertaining reading and some nice pictures you will probably enjoy it. If your looking for some of Grady's tried and proven recipes, buy all of his other books. This one seems like an attempt to use his name to sell some books and stroke some of his friends back.

Life in the saddle, on the trail, and in the outback has forged a style of living that cowboy-turned-chef Grady Spears calls the Cowboy Way. It's a life where boots and hats are much more about function than fashion. It means that when you eat, drink, and breathe the tending of cattle, raising beef is not just some exercise where loss is charted on a spreadsheet. When your days are filled with the smells of fresh-cut hay and the creaking of worn leather, when you wake up with the sun and to the smell of coffee on the boil and biscuits from the chuck wagon, you are living the Cowboy Way.Because cowboys spend long days outdoors in every kind of weather, sometimes for weeks at a time, satiating a cowboy's hunger is a challenge for ranch cooks from Texas to Florida, north into Canada, and south of the border into Mexico. This collection of almost one hundred recipes is not only the result of Grady's journey across North America, but also the cowboy's journey through history. In Cooking the Cowboy Way, you'll have a ringside seat at the rodeo as Grady wrestles down new recipes from some incredible cowboy cooks and kitchen wranglers who know what hungry cow folks want to eat. And in the process, you'll be carried away by the magic of starry nights by the campfire and seduced by the heritage of the chuck wagon and ranch kitchens, where the menus are still stoked by the traditions of the Old West just as they have been for a century or more.

The Liquid Kitchen: Groovy Drinks

Hayden Wood is the Jamie Oliver of cocktails. He writes in a very friendly and approacable manner with hints of humour and stories from his experience. This book explains the basics in detail so that anyone can make cocktails at home. He emphasizes the use of equipment that can be obtained easily if you don't already have it at home; and the drinks are focused mainly on using fresh ingredients that are cheap and readily available, rather than a whole shelf of ready-made liquers.
For the experienced bartender, this book is full of new and refreshing ideas with stunningly sexy pictures of the cocktails. I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

The sale for "The Queen is in the Kitchen" is misleading, and borders on fraudulant. The photo shown is for the hardcover book with dust cover. If you look at the title, they note that it's paperback. I would not trust this seller to be honest.

Cookies From Hawaii's Kitchen Review

The best thing about this cookbook is that it is spiral bound!
It's also a downside, as there are so many pages you'll have to fuss with them to get the book to lie flat. That's not such a horrible thing when it comes to it, but still...I find myself wishing they'd used a slightly larger book comb so the pages turn easily.
There are a lot of local kine favorites in this: Russian Tea Cookies, Almond Cookies, etc. Also those mysterious cookies that simply must be Hawaiian because they have either macadamia nuts OR pineapple in them (but are probably good anyway).
In addition to recipes, the book has excellent bits about substitutions and baking tips that I was pleased to see in a small book like this.
It's definitely well worth the price, whether for oneself or as a gift. I've already made note of the various cookies I'll be trying out very soon!

Those of us who love to cook sometimes love to just curl up with a cookbook on a quiet night and READ. this book is wonderful for these times... it is infused with a sense of calm, joy, peace, a love of nature and simple pleasures. I love how the recipes are arranged according to season, so that the ingredients and richness of the meals are in sync with changing weather and ingredients throughout the year. and reading the section about fresh herbs made me run out to the local garden center to buy basil. best of all, there's not a bad recipe in the bunch. unlike many vegetarian cooks who seem to want to smother everyhthign with cumin and miso, Brother Victor is a master of simplicity. the recipes have one or two perfectly chosen herbs to bring out natural flavors, subtly and iwth restraint. i highly recommend this book!

The Africa News Cookbook: African Cooking for Western Kitchens (Penguin Handbooks) Review

I've had this book for years and can truly testify that it's one of the best cook books in my collection which includes classics like the Joy of Cooking by the Rombauer mother and daughter, and Cookwise by Shirley Corriher.
"The AFrica News Cookbook" has delicious recipes, including curry chicken, fish stew, that come from all over the continent. The book illustrates the various cultural mixes that distinguish each region and country.
Plus, the recipes are easy to make.
More ingredients are available since the book was published in 1986. I can buy palm oil at my local grocery store and I live in Cleveland.
This book is worth the money, whether you're a novice (like I was when I bought it) or experienced with African cooking.

In the French Kitchen Garden: The Joys of Cultivating a Potager Review

In the French Kitchen Garden: The Joys of Cultivating a Potager
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are lucky enough to ever meet Gerogeanne Brennan, you know that she is the real thing: down to earth, a gourmand who gardens. You can trust that Brennan speaks from her experience, not from the experience of her "experts."
In this book Brennan does something unusal that you do not usually find in gardening books, especially ones that are geared for begining gardeners. There are no lists of 10 fool proof plants, nor strict instructions to plant something a specific way on an absolute date or face certain failure. (Honestly, why Martha thinks you have to plant peas on St. Patrick's Day is beyond me.) Brennan instead wants you to understand the philosophy of the potager, and then make your own rules.
Brennan suggests what you might want to plant in each of the four seasons (wherever you happen to live) and tells you what typically would be planted in a true French potager at the same season; Brennan gives you sources to find these plants; Brennan even gives you an idea of what size pot you would need if you are restricted to balconey gardening. Very thoughtful. Though I have not tried any of the recipes in this book, they are similar to others you can find in her well-received cook books.
The book itself is small and well made; the paper is heavy. It feels good in your hand. The illustrations are charming without being too cute, and often they illustrate a garden layout that actually makes sense. And of course Brennan's writing is rich and clear.
This is a good book for a beginning gardener. You will not be dissappointed.

I absolutely loved this book, as does my mother who is originally from Silesia, Germany (now Poland). The recipes use authentic ingredients, are easy to follow, and are indicative of the foods from all regions of Germany, not just East, West, South, North like so many other cookbooks. My father was stationed throughout Germany, so we are familiar with the different flavors of Germany and appreciated the author's broad reach so that we could sample our many favorites, and we found new ones, to. My mother is very critical (no surprise!) about German cookbooks and asked me to order this one for her birthday since she's enjoyed the recipes we've prepared.

That Hungarian's in My Kitchen: 125 Hungarian, American and Kosher Recipes

When I first thumbed through this cookbook, my immediate thought was that some dreadful mistake had been made, and that I'd been sent the wrong cookbook. After all, the recipes (largely unfamiliar to Hungarians, but that's another story) were generally followed by only one paragraph of text. In fact, what I've written up to this point was about all the information the author provided the reader in making each dish.
Well... ghastly, awful, a joke... all three of these terms would fairly and accurately descibe this so-called cookbook. But then it dawned on me, surely this is one of those vanity press jobs. And taken in that light, I think Amazon really ought to point out that fact to would-be buyers ahead of time. So please don't get fooled like I was. Repacking it and returning it to Amazon was certainly no pleasure.

Pioneer Kitchen: A Frontier Cookbook Review

Pioneer Kitchen: A Frontier Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Author, Ethel Reed, and Artist Kathy Cernusak, have merged their talents in creating a cookbook which will delight the historian as well as the culinary artist.
Pioneer Kitchen features a collection of heretofore lost, or soon to be forgotten, recipes of the American West Frontier. If you want to bake bread for a wagon train of pioneer immigrants, you "pour a bushel of floor in a trough..." and proceed from there. If you are more interested in eliciting compliments and a bouquet of daisies from your modern "frontiersman," you might try one of the many modified pioneer recipes, still in use today in ranching communities throughout the American West.
Included in Pineer Kitchen is a humorous collection of Frontier stories and "home remedies." Most readers will be surprised to discover such little known facts as the Pioneer remedy for "leanness." The sage advice of one Frontier authority was to, ...eat oatmeal, cracked wheat, graham mush, baked sweet apples, roasted and boiled beef, Cultivate jolly people, and bathe daily!"

The Kitchen Table Book Review

The Kitchen Table Book
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just a quick note about this book, 'The Kitchen Table Book'. I'm one who grew up with a grandmother, that was raised in the country and in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Dr's were either not available or came at a premium. Hence, a lot of 'cures' came from home remedies and basic nutrition. This book shows in detail the benefits from the foods and spices we normally consume. It fits very well with what my grandmother was raised with and what she imparted to us along the way. It is the kind of book that should be on every kitchen table and followed as to daily nutrition. By utilizing the knowledge found in these pages, one should be able to reduce the need for doctor visits, with the exception of catastrophic events. By understanding the health benefits for the various foods, most people should be able to maintain good health without the use of supplements and multiple, doctor-prescribed medications. This book is a great guide towards that goal.

I read Steve Salerno's superb review of "But Wait" in the WSJ on March 25, instantly downloaded the book to my Kindle2, and dug in (after setting the font size much larger for my older eyes).
The author had me laughing many times, but, more seriously, there are countless tip and tricks revealed about the infomercial business and selling in general that make this a highly worthwhile read.
I also love talking with friends about the book because everyone knows or remembers the gadgets, get rich quick seminars, and celebrities who hawk pimple treatments and swamp land in Arkansas.
About a third of my way into "But Wait," I began having a strange fantasy: maybe we're all living inside one giant, massive informercial. After all, I bought my kindle2 based on the infomercials at amazon's website!

The Hadassah Everyday Cookbook: Daily Meals for the Contemporary Jewish Kitchen Review

The Hadassah Everyday Cookbook: Daily Meals for the Contemporary Jewish Kitchen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently purchased this cookbook and find myself turning to it every day for easy, delicious dinners that fit the way I eat. I was drawn to the cookbook because it is written by Leah Koenig, who is an awesome food writer (check her out at [...]). I started reading her when she was writing Jew and the Carrot for Hazon [...], and I was drawn to her succinct, warm voice as a writer and the way in which she is redefining Jewish eating to include sustainable and simply delicious choices today. Without being preachy, Leah nudges readers to choose organic and local produce - at least sometimes. I think her shopping cart often looks similar to mine, meaning it includes trips to the farmer's market or picking up produce at the CSA - only what she makes is more delicious, and now I get to make it, too!
So far I have made a number of delicious dinners. Tonight I had the maple glazed chicken teriyaki, which comes together in 12 minutes once it's marinated overnight - pretty great for a weeknight meal. I had it with soba noodles, as suggested, and roasted broccoli rabe made with the ginger green bean recipe. Leah encourages readers to use ingredients that are in season, and that looked better than the green beans - and came out great. After dinner we had friends over for the brownies with pomegranate whipped cream, which was ingenious. A hit.
Sunday night was carmelized onion rice with orange ginger seitan and garlicky greens - amazing. I used the leftover carmelized onion rice last night and made seitan tomato stew. I gave some of this to a vegan friend who was feeling under the weather and he loved it. I also made the citrus cod, which was so pretty with lemon, lime and orange slices, with lemony asparagus, and another night my husband was delighted that I chose the cucumber and mint lamb salad.
I love that so far everything is easy, elegant, adaptable, clear, and uses readily available ingredients with just enough of a twist to keep things interesting. I appreciate that the recipes generally serve 4, which makes them easy to halve for us (we're newlyweds) or have company or leftovers. I am thinking of starting a cooking club with my office so we can rotate making more of the recipes - and so I get to try them all! I can't wait until I have more time on a weekend to try out more of the brunch and breakfast ideas. I recommend this cookbook to novice or experienced cooks, and agree with the introduction that a knife skills class is most helpful when working with a lot of produce. It would be a great gift for a newlywed couple or a great hostess gift, and it has plenty for omnivores, vegetarians, and lots for vegans.
