I was fortunate enough to have a Mom who bought this book. She loaned it to me and told me I would not only LOVE it, but would not want to give it back. She was right!! It is unlike any cookbook I have ever seen. Although there are recipes in the book, the main focus is on the stories that accompany the recipes. They are heartwarming, thought provoking, and in the case of one story I think of, even a bit sad.If you are older then 45, I would say you have lived some of the events in the book. If you are younger, well, you can learn allot about the way it used to be back before society almost mandated "Mom" to work outside the home. There are wonderful places, times, and people told about in this book. At the end of each story, there are recipes that you may not find anywhere else. For instance, LUMBERJACK BEANS accompanied a humorous and very interesting story of a couple who worked in a lumber camp during the depression. And how about SALT PORK CAKE? Not a usual find in a cook book, I am sure. But, it goes along with a short story about a person's remembrances and heritage, along with four other recipes. I found that I re-read most of the stories, wanting to savor the times, aroma, thoughts, and feelings that each one gave to me. Each story is different, with it's own feel. But each one is an event of the mind. They give insight to a world that, sadly enough, has almost disappeared from our lives. This book is fantastic fun! It can recapture some of what has been lost with progress. Try it. You'll like it!!

Back in the Good Old Days life revolved around the kitchen table- not the television. There we brought the fresh vegetables from the garden for cleaning and canning. There we folded hands and gave thanks for the good things the Lord had provided. There we shared bread and time with one another. This look back into the kitchen of yesteryear is sure to warm you just like the old wood cook stove.
