I'm In The Mood For Food: In The Kitchen With Garfield Review

Our son loves to cook. He also loves Garfield. He is living away from home during his college break, and, being an ever concerned mother, when I saw this book I thought what a great book to send to our son for his summer fun, and it could be a great survival book. I picked it up out of a sense of fun and mother's happiness, and, to my delight, I found a serious cook book lay deliciously hidden beneath the cover. Ahh, "Decadent Roasted Blue Chees Potatoes," "Magnifico Mushroom Risotto," "Beat Me. Whip Me. Make Me Eat Rosemary Scalloped Potatoes," ah yes, like the great Native American Tradition, this is a book for the Heyokas out there, and the jesters. It is cooking with heart, with fun, and what fellow or gal with a great sense of humor and a great palate wouldn't just love the greatness of this hidden treasure book of fun and food.
Of course, there is ever-practical advice, such as Garfied's Fine Dining Faux Pas (Lord only knows who your child might be dating, and they can kindly leave this page open so that the "would-be date" will not embarrass your child while dining in a fine establishment). Thus, the advice, and this is just one of many, that one should not gargle with your aperitif, could simply be one of many saving graces.
I highly recommend this book. I readily admit I have kept the copy I bought for our son, and ordered many more for the rest of our children so that after a hard day, they may laugh and cook and be oh so glad to have an outrageous mother who has taught them love, laughter, and fine dining make for a happier day.

Over the years, Garfield the cat has struck a chord with readers who can identify with his laidback, shall-we-say-lazy approach to life. The famous feline--whose passion for food and sleep is matched only by his aversion to diet and exercise (he prefers lie-downs to sit-ups)--has become the poster cat for all kinds of people, none of whom would ever describe themselves as "Type A's."To celebrate being the world's favorite feline, Garfield introduces I'm in the Mood for Food: In the Kitchen with Garfield.Chock-full of tasty recipes, the cookbook also features spot art and food-related Garfield comics in color. I'm in the Mood for Food includes chapters on Family Food, Party Food, Pasta, Outdoor Cooking, Kids' Recipes, Snacks, and Desserts. Consider some of these mouth-watering morsels: Lazy Cat's Lasagna, Color Me Hungry Red Pepper Potato Frittata, Royal Roasted Lemon-Herb Chicken and I'd Rather Be Happy Than Thin Chocolate-Chunk Cookies. All in all, I'm in the Mood for Food will appeal to cooks everywhere, especially those who love Garfield and, like him, believe that the best things in life are edible.

This is a cookbook. That's it. Now, what is so bad about that? When I got this book I thought it would be more of a party-planning book, such as Christopher Lowell's: themes, and dishes to go with the themes. But it's not. It's just a book telling about how she likes to cook with her kids and other families, the fact that she is a Food Network producer and trained chef, and all the places she has lived in. The dishes are arranged the usual way: appetizers, mains, desserts, etc. There are maybe four-themed "parties," and all she does is reference the page numbers of the recipes, and several themes use the exact same recipes for each!
Now tell me something: would your kids eat dishes like
pickled shrimp with mango and fennel? (and would you serve shrimp to a crowd of people, kids included?)
duck and andouille jambalaya? (and once again, would you serve duck to a crowd, only to be thrown out and wasted by the children?)
grilled lobsters with garlic butter? (um, yeah, what part of this are the children going to be able to do? Grilling around children? My idea of a supervision nightmare.)
This is a beautiful cookbook full of color photos and beautiful graphic design (not a photo for each dish, however). And there are some kid-friendly recipes, like Spaghetti carbonara and Parmesan chicken fingers. But do you need a kids' cookbook for that? Your standard Betty Crocker cookbook has these recipes, I'm sure.
This is a fun idea, and cooking with your kids is wonderful. But this is not marketed correctly. If you're going to cook with $40 ingredients, don't try it out on your kids or others' kids. Let them Try your entree at a restaurant and THEN make it at home.

This book is so much fun to use, and is gorgeous to look at. Having projects that you can do with your child by just going to the kitchen and using tools and food you already own is such a fabulous idea. So many project books for kids require items you have to go out and get especially for the project --- not very convenient for spur of the moment fun. This book makes it easy to be spontaneous. And you'll have as much fun as your child! My eight year old and three year old both love it.
I highly recommend this book!

Williams-Sonoma Family Meals: Creating Traditions in the Kitchen Review

Williams-Sonoma Family Meals: Creating Traditions in the Kitchen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Many other reviewers have listed the recipes contained herein. Most are pretty lengthy in process. Few could be assembled in less than an hour. This book is beautiful to look at with an ample number of lush photographs. It promotes almost-lost traditions of baking homemade bread, cheese and pickles as well as making marshmallows from scrach, which taste and feel significantly different than those found in the plastic bags.
Who will love this book: Moderns and "country" cooks who enjoy the process of cooking and the time spent with family will love the ideas, photographs and suggestions. The pictures are reminiscent of a rustic style home in the country with a family featured throughout working together on the recipes. Whether most children would eat some of these recipes largely depends on your family. The food has an appeal as it is all "from scratch" and relies on whole foods and real ingredients to a large extent, however whole foods are not necessarily low-fat or whole grain. If you're opposed to packages mixes and the like, this is your style.
Who will not like this book: The health-conscious, whole-grain oriented, anti-sugar, modern, in a hurry to get dinner on the table, stressed-out mom with picky eaters. The recipes are a mix of old school and ethnic-flare, which is nice. However, if your kids are the mac 'n' cheese or pizza type, they will not eat most of these. Also, meal prep is way too long and the emphasis is on taking time to enjoy the preparation, rather than a quick meal, which is what the majority of moms I know are concerned about. The proverbial "soccer mom" will enjoy the pictures and never use the recipes. Also, most bread recipes rely on white flour and sugar is used without reservation. I'm concerned about my kids feasting on copious amounts of these ingredients for medically sound reasons and cannot in good conscience make most of these. Also, the meat recipes and cheese recipes are neither low in fats nor cholesterol and do not lend well to conversions of that type.
All that said, the book is beautiful to look at and to read. It is strongly reminiscent of generations past but may not translate well to modern cooks or activity-centered families. As with most cookbooks in the Williams-Sonoma line, this is created for people who enjoy the process of cooking and don't mind spending time to do so. If you are one of them, enjoy!

I first saw this book at our local library and fell in love with its graphics and fun recipes to do with kids. The recipes are colorful and many would make great teacher gifts all year around. There are recipes for lunch, such as, tea cup soup and snowman sandwiches...dressed up tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. Our family is having a reunion this weekend and the caramel corn with orange and chocolate should be a hit. And our 4-H group recently used the cookies in a jar recipe for a project learning day and the kids really enjoyed themselves as they scooped in the ingredients and made colorful tags. This book will get lots of use year around!

The kitchen is warm, the pace relaxed, and the conversation easy. Children are also proud of their culinary accomplishments, exclaiming at the table: "I helped make it!" and then diving into a huge portion of those very same carrots they peeled just minutes earlier. Each recipe includes a list of exactly which steps kids can tackle. In addition, there are tips on how to incorporate healthful ingredients and new flavors into a child's diet; how to make a kitchen safe for children; and how to pull off a kids' cooking party. The indispensable companion to every family's favorite gathering spot, The Family Kitchen has a place in every home.Surely I am not the only mother who can barely recall what it was like before three kids took over the house, the car, the backyard, and my heart, and it's precisely because of this 180-degree turnaround that I wanted to write this book. The book is for moms and dads who like to cook, who want to teach their kids proficiency in the kitchen, and who want to eat well—without pretension—when they find time to cook at home. Above all, this book is about the possibilities for connecting with your kids and enjoying your family by cooking together. —From the Introduction

Williams-Sonoma Kids in the Kitchen: Fun Food Review

Williams-Sonoma Kids in the Kitchen: Fun Food
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was looking through quite a few books before settleing on this one. For my two boys I knew I needed pictures at least of the dish and a clear discription. I also found that other recipe books were packed with treats and snacks what I really didn't want nor need.
There is a list of ingredients (which makes it easy to check if you have everything) and a list of tools
The recipe is then divided into steps , and again subdivided for easy reading. There is a photograph of pretty much every other step that depicts other children cooking the dish at those very steps. At the end there are suggestions for easy variations which is awesome because some kids just might like different ingredients and it stretches the 25 recipes to quite a few more.
The recipes are healthy, basic but with a great variety. So there should be something for everyone. Great buy! Great book! Definately a keeper.
