Stir-Fry (Williams-Sonoma Kitchen Library) Review

Stir-Fry (Williams-Sonoma Kitchen Library)

Many people think that they can just chop up some veggies and meat, add soy sauce, and have a great meal...not true. This book gives you the details you need (such as, once you add the meat, stir every 20 seconds so it will brown properly) to create restaurant-quality stir-fry. And the All-Purpose Stir-Fry Sauce recipe in the beginning is really excellent, although I like to add cornstarch & extra water to mine to make a thicker sauce. I have not tried any of the non-Asian inspired dishes, and frankly think that they should not have been included, but all of the ones I have tried (Orange-Chili Beef, Beef Asparagus & Red Pepper, Minced Chicken in Lettuce Cups, Kung Pao Chicken--my husband's new favorite for dinner guests, Snapper with Tangarine-Chili sauce, Ants on a Hill, Quick Pot Stickers--a little tricky until you get used to the folding) have all been very good and have been made more than once.

I was at my daughter in law's house for dinner last month and she served a salad from this cookbook. It was delicious! I wanted to write down the recipe to bring home, but after looking through the cookbook I found so many good recipes that I had to buy it instead. I bought two books, one for myself and one for my daughter as an upcoming wedding gift. The recipes are well written, the ingredients are easy to find, and the soups and salads are perfect for a family. Nothing stuffy about this cookbook, just comfort and good eating.

I love the Colorful Recipes series. Just browsing through the recipes is a mouthwatering experience. A gorgeous picture accompanies almost every single recipe. The recipes themselves require just good basic cooking skills and produce luscious, fresh-tasting dishes. A must have series if you love beautiful and honest food.

With New Healthy Kitchen Starters, you can improve your diet while enjoying appetizers such as Cantaloupe and Feta Cheese Salad, Grilled Zucchini Skewers with Coriander, or Prosciutto-Wrapped Radicchio Wedges. This colorful series of healthy cookbooks takes a commonsense approach to eating right. Food fads and trendy diets may come and go, but your family doctor can tell you that you will never go wrong eating a wide variety of fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains, and legumes. We all know that we're supposed to be eating several servings of each of these foods every day. But you might not know that we're also supposed to be eating as many different colors of fruit and vegetable as possible. The naturally occurring pigments that give vibrant colors to fruits and vegetables also offer an array of unique health benefits, boosting your immune system and fighting common diseases and conditions as you age. These pigments and other plant compounds -- known as antioxidants and phytochemicals -- work in tandem with vitamins, minerals, and fiber to keep our bodies strong and well. The amazing benefits of colorful foods, whole grains, legumes, seeds, and nuts are being studied in labs across the country and touted by government experts on nutrition. But all the good advice in the world won't help you put a healthy dinner on the table. The books of the New Healthy Kitchen series -- Starters, Main Dishes, and Desserts -- will do just that. The 60 recipes in these pages, grouped by the color of a key ingredient, offer dozens of appealing and easy ways to bring a rainbow of fruits, vegetables, and grains into your daily meals. Even better, 24 "Fresh Ideas" suggest simple ways of enjoying fresh produce as a wholesome and impromptu snack. With New Healthy Kitchen Starters, eating right won't be a sacrifice or a chore. In these books, healthy food means good food, simply prepared and a pleasure to eat.

This is one of the better dessert cookbooks I own. I have made several items and especially liked the Almond Scented White Cake topped with raspberries. Make it and you will be the hit and envy of any party to which you take it. Other greats include: Gingerbread with Crystallized Ginger, Hazelnut-Raspberry Torte and the Chocolate Chip Banana cupcakes. If you love to bake and like to impress, this book is for you.

My wife and daughter have baked six different breads (several times each) from this book and in every case the breads have been outstanding. They as bakers and I as a consumer are more than thrilled. We also agree that the book is profusely illustrated (wish more cook books were done as well), and instructions are easy to follow.

Mexican Favorites (Williams-Sonoma Kitchen Library) Review

Mexican Favorites (Williams-Sonoma Kitchen Library)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
On the whole, this book is a very good introduction to Mexican Cooking (or more properly the American version of Mexican Cooking.) The recipes are generally easy to prepare and very good to eat.
The book begins with a nice section on basic techniques and recipes for things like different salsas. The book doesn't have all of the recipes one might expect to find in a traditional Mexican cookbook. However, several of the recipes are clever variations on some traditional themes in Mexican cooking. All of the recipes have photos, which is nice when determining what "looks good" for dinner.
I would recommend this book for either a beginner to Mexican cooking or for someone looking to add variety to their Mexican recipe collection.

Williams-Sonoma The Best of the Kitchen Library: Meats & Poultry Review

Williams-Sonoma The Best of the Kitchen Library: Meats and Poultry
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a pretty good book. There are a variety of recipes for beef (including steaks, roasts, ground), pork, poultry (primarily chicken, but some quail, duck, etc), lamb, and veal. The Williams-Sonoma publishers are masters at selling pictures to the audience and getting you to buy the book based on the picture (hey, they sold me! :) ). Each recipe is accompanied with a beautiful picture of the dish. Sometimes the pictures have side dishes in them that look equally appealing, but there is no recipe in the book for the side dishes (so the title is strict: this is only meats and poultry). There also is a small section in the front for creating sauces that are used in the dishes. I have made a few of the beef recipes and the chicken sausage fettucine with white wine (amazing and VERY quick to make), and have been happy so far.
My only major qualm with this book is that many of the recipes are geared for grilling. I know WS has other books on grilling, and this book seems to encompass many of the recipes. I do love grilled foods, but living in a small apartment, I don't have the luxury of firing up the grill like others may have. Most of the recipes that require grilling also have instructions for broiling or searing/grilling indoors, so you can likely still make the recipe--it probably just won't taste as good. Overall a good book for the money. However, it seems like a good portion of these recipes are in other WS cookbooks, so if you already have some WS meat, poultry, and grilling books (I do not), this may not be for you.

Fish (Williams-Sonoma Kitchen Library) Review

Fish (Williams-Sonoma Kitchen Library)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This slim volume of 44 recipes offers a great deal of variety for the home cook, showcasing recipes from around the world using the standard varieties of fish found in good fish markets throughout the country. Dividing the book into sections, the author features all the various methods of preparation--poaching and steaming, sautéing and frying, broiling and grilling, and baking and roasting--along with the garnishes, sauces, and salsas that can make fish cookery so interesting. A helpful photo is included for each recipe, along with suggested accompaniments.
Among the most interesting recipes for those looking for something different are: Tandoori Fish, with its marinade of ginger, onion, garlic, a variety of (readily available) Asian spices, and yogurt; Steamed Fish with ginger, green onions, and soy sauce; Broiled Fish in a Greek Marinade of garlic, oregano, thyme, and ouzo; and, my favorite, Italian Fish Stew, with green peppers, onions, garlic, red pepper flakes, fennel, plum tomatoes and white wine. None of these recipes cook for more than 8 - 10 minutes, so if all the preparation is done ahead of time, cooking can be a no-fuss, last-minute activity.
A few of the recipes are not very attractive to look at. Though the Salmon Poached in Red Wine with Caramelized Shallots sounds as if it would be tasty, the purplish red wine sauce that bathes the fish is pretty daunting to look at. Trout with Prosciutto and Sage also sounds tasty, but the fish is served whole--the head, tail, and skin intact--not a pretty sight when wrapped in a blanket of red prosciutto.
No shellfish recipes are included, and those who live in parts of the country such as Florida and Hawaii, where a more exotic variety of fish is readily available, will have to figure out their own substitutions in these recipes. There is no mention of fish such as mahi-mahi or the unusual varieties of snapper so plentiful in these areas. A good cookbook with many interesting recipes, this is a helpful addition to a library which already has a more complete book on fish cookery. Mary Whipple

Williams-Sonoma Family Meals: Creating Traditions in the Kitchen Review

Williams-Sonoma Family Meals: Creating Traditions in the Kitchen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Many other reviewers have listed the recipes contained herein. Most are pretty lengthy in process. Few could be assembled in less than an hour. This book is beautiful to look at with an ample number of lush photographs. It promotes almost-lost traditions of baking homemade bread, cheese and pickles as well as making marshmallows from scrach, which taste and feel significantly different than those found in the plastic bags.
Who will love this book: Moderns and "country" cooks who enjoy the process of cooking and the time spent with family will love the ideas, photographs and suggestions. The pictures are reminiscent of a rustic style home in the country with a family featured throughout working together on the recipes. Whether most children would eat some of these recipes largely depends on your family. The food has an appeal as it is all "from scratch" and relies on whole foods and real ingredients to a large extent, however whole foods are not necessarily low-fat or whole grain. If you're opposed to packages mixes and the like, this is your style.
Who will not like this book: The health-conscious, whole-grain oriented, anti-sugar, modern, in a hurry to get dinner on the table, stressed-out mom with picky eaters. The recipes are a mix of old school and ethnic-flare, which is nice. However, if your kids are the mac 'n' cheese or pizza type, they will not eat most of these. Also, meal prep is way too long and the emphasis is on taking time to enjoy the preparation, rather than a quick meal, which is what the majority of moms I know are concerned about. The proverbial "soccer mom" will enjoy the pictures and never use the recipes. Also, most bread recipes rely on white flour and sugar is used without reservation. I'm concerned about my kids feasting on copious amounts of these ingredients for medically sound reasons and cannot in good conscience make most of these. Also, the meat recipes and cheese recipes are neither low in fats nor cholesterol and do not lend well to conversions of that type.
All that said, the book is beautiful to look at and to read. It is strongly reminiscent of generations past but may not translate well to modern cooks or activity-centered families. As with most cookbooks in the Williams-Sonoma line, this is created for people who enjoy the process of cooking and don't mind spending time to do so. If you are one of them, enjoy!

For Maria Helm Sinskey—author, award-winning chef, and mother—one of the best ways to spend time with family and friends is to gather in the kitchen to cook. Whether tossing a salad of lettuces fresh from the garden, or filling the house with the scent of Banana–Brown Sugar Muffins and hearty Braised Beef Stew, Maria and her family show you how effortless it is to have fun in the kitchen. Filled with delicious, easy to prepare, made-from-scratch recipes such as Fresh Rosemary Focaccia, Corn Fritters with Lime, Chicken-Coconut Curry, and Baked Butterscotch Puddings, Family Meals is written for people of all ages. Family Meals is much more than just a collection of recipes. Each chapter sparks curiosity about where food comes from and how the foods we love are made through culinary projects such as curing bacon, smoking salmon, and making homemade ricotta cheese.
