I just received my copy of this book today and I am just enthralled with how lovely it is. This is not just a cutesy story about kitchen witches, this book has all kinds of lore and information in it, well-suited for children.
This story follows Ivy, a junior witch, and we are basically reading what she is writing in her grimoire.
For instance:
Everybody has heard of "eye of newt and toe of frog," right?
Also, "wool of bat and tongue of dog"? Those words are from an
old witches' incantation found in Shakespeare's Macbeth........
Well, guess what? They weren't really nasty ingredients at all.
It was just witches' code for plants and herbs that could easily be found in the garden or fields nearby.
And it gives a further list of plants and their codenames.
There are a couple of pages about Beltaine and May Baskets, Midsummer's Day, Samhain, and Yule.
The illustrations are just adorable, and the author did a wonderful job of weaving the story with the lore.
There is a beautiful dedication to his wife at the end.
I love that I have added this wonderful book to my collection.
