This delightful, slim volume is incredibly easy to use, with a great variety of tips & tricks for virtually fool-proof muffins. Best of all, the recipes cover the gamut from no-fat to low-fat, with no sacrifice of flavor or texture. Sweet or savory, they are all good. Among my favorites, pineapple corn muffins & blueberry creme muffins. My sister, an accomplished baker, swears by the Irish soda bread muffins, and the no-fat blueberry jam recipe.

The Complete Tassajara Cookbook: Recipes, Techniques, and Reflections from the Famed Zen Kitchen Review

The Complete Tassajara Cookbook: Recipes, Techniques, and Reflections from the Famed Zen Kitchen
Average Reviews:

This is not a traditional cookbook. No pictures, lots of essays, some poetry, and basic recipes. What distinguishes it are Espe Brown's pontifications about cooking, zen, life. Like the movie, How To Cook Your Life, this book is an expression of Espe Brown's personality rather that his cooking expertise. The recipes are very basic - but I guess that's the point. He wants readers to cook by feel, by what they already know, rather than by measure and specific instructions. As I read many of the recipes, like the one for kidney bean chili, I thought, Wow, I already know how to do that.
I was also surprised that this wasn't a vegan or a health cookbook. Lots of the recipes call for eggs, milk, cheese, and oil. Not very au courant (the Engine 2 folks would have a fit), but I kind of like that about EB - he's got an acerbic (but loving) sense of humor - he can throw jabs at macrobiotics, and I'm sure at veganism. He's community-conscious and compassionate, but no food purist. Lots of vegan cookbooks seem rather self-righteous and humorless. EB's cookbook is imperfect, but meandering and fun.

I was browsing through this book and was intrigued by the recipes...they seemed simple and I love Italian food. I found several that I wanted to try and then started to notice the nutritional info...they were all so healthy!! Then I noticed the Weight Watchers line in the title!!! No wonder!!
I have tried ten recipes so far in this book and have loved every one! Most can be made with things I already have on hand...no strange ingredients. The chicken marsala was great as was the roasted pepper pesto over penne pasta. We loved the peas with prosciutto. My husband and two teens have loved it all and never knew it was "health' food.I highly recomend this book for busy cooks who love Italian food. It's so nice to get away from 'diet' food!

Most of my dessert recipes are Julia Child-style rich, but I recently got this book from the library to see how well I could make low-fat, whole-wheat baking work (I've been baking since I was 8 and use mostly my own recipes). Yesterday I made my usual white flour, high-fat, high-sugar banana bread for my entire office, which everyone loved. Today I made the whole wheat Brown Sugar Banana Bread from the bread section of this cookbook, without the nuts, and the ENTIRE office is raving about it! Everyone ate both kinds and declared this one just as good, if not better. I also got a number of her other cookbooks and have been VERY impressed with the recipes. Definitely a must-have for any kitchen.

The Atkins Shopping Guide: Indispensable Tips and Guidelines for Successfully Stocking Your Low-carb Kitchen Review

The Atkins Shopping Guide: Indispensable Tips and Guidelines for Successfully Stocking Your Low-carb Kitchen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, my credentials: I lost fifty pounds on this diet. This is a review of this guide, not of the diet.
The beginning part of the book gives a brief, peppy rundown on the diet itself. It has some good information, but the tone is irritating. The phrase 'doing Atkins' may be colloquially understood, but it sounds amateurish and is heavily overused. No opportunity to pimp Atkins brand products is passed up. The result had me on edge by the time I began reading the actual shopping guide, and then it got worse.
The useful parts are those dealing with raw foods, ones that don't involve 'branding' (that's corporate newspeak for "ramming the product name into your head and keeping it there," folks): fruits, basic meats, cheeses. Gouda is gouda; tofu is tofu; beets are beets. Unfortunately, even these parts suffer from some degree of measurement inconsistency.
If you're going to compare nutritional facts from item to item, you have to use the same size portions for each item in a class. It is no good referring to 1/2 cup of most vegetables, then switching to 'half a baked potato' or 'two tablespoons'. Sure, the reader can convert, but isn't that why I bought the book? Pick a half cup and stick with it. Or an ounce. A ton. I don't care, as long as it's consistent, and the book's measurements are often so inconsistent as to be impractical for reference.
Where the book really begins to go south is when it comes to any form of 'branded' food. Atkins Nutritionals, or whichever branch of the Atkins empire put this out, has naturally listed Atkins brand products first in every category. Okay, fine, we're big kids and can read past this obvious shill; but even so, a lot of the other name brand products evaluated are going to change as the market reacts. That's going to make a big chunk of this book obsolete. Plus, the obvious placement of Atkins brand stuff first leaves a lingering suspicion: how did they choose the brands for the book? I can't find a lot of them on my local shelves. Is it possible that the ones chosen were those that would look undesirable relative to Atkins brand products? I don't know; I'm not a professional nutritionist or supermarket chain buyer. All I know is that the array of choices sure makes the Atkins stuff look like the best in every category. Funny how that worked, eh?
The problem with low-carb dieting, at this writing, is that our food providers have decided to brand a lot of their products with the 'low-carb' label, as if merely saying so will make it so. The guide states, correctly, that this stems from a lack of regulation. A balanced, professionally written guide would have been a great step forward; the message urged upon the reader from nearly every page of this book--"Just buy ours!"--is a step backward.
Like any sales brochure, this should be free. Don't pay $7.50 for it.

What a nice surprise. I'm not a Marilu Henner fan and I've only glanced at her previous books, but this one caught my eye because of the wealth of information in it. In an easy read fashion, she covers all the basics...how to evaluate your kitchen, how to make changes, what chemicals are harmful both in food and in cleaning supplies and healthy alternatives to both. She lists name brands for healthy food alternatives which takes the trial and error out of shopping. The recipes are not that different from "normal" cooking...a couple of healthy changes and you're on your way to a delicious meal. This book is not entirely vegetarian as it contains both fish and chicken recipes. It is a great place to start in making healthy changes in your life. It's like having several resource books and a cookbook all in one.

Stella's Kitchen: Creative Cooking for Fun, Flavor, and a Lean, Strong Body Review

Stella's Kitchen: Creative Cooking for Fun, Flavor, and a Lean, Strong Body

My husband and I have fought for years about what to eat. He is thin, can eat a pint of Ben and Jerry's a night without *visible* repercussions and loves meat and pasta and potatoes. I, on the other hand, have been competing in Ultimate Frisbee, I lift weights, run, teach aerobics and Spinning and have the lifestyle and genes that will always make it necessary to watch my diet and excercise.
Food has been a constant battle with my husband; he wants to make pasta and broccoli with olive oil (which all makes me sick and lazy) and I want a salad. I bought this cookbook, and now we've found peace. I don't feel "gloppy" after eating these recipes and he feels satiated. He can cook and I trust that he won't over-butter-and-starch me. (Normally, I feel a need to defend my diet and the kitchen). I can cook and he doesn't feel like I'm starving him. It just feels balanced. He browsed through the book one day and said, " I would eat anything in here" (BTW, he's a picky eater) and I would too!
The recipes are simple- sometimes painfully so- and that is a reminder that you can still eat healthy food during busy times and spend *less* time than if you went to the nearest junk food outlet. There are no dessert recipes, but the smoothies taste like dessert!

Fresh from a Vegetarian Kitchen: 450 Delicious Recipes and 75 minues for everyday festive and ethnic vegetarian meals--all low in fat and free of cholesterol, eggs and dairy

Let's get this straight - DO NOT buy this cookbook if you are a new vegan/vegetarian, and are looking for tasty meals that will make you forget your longing for meat. This cookbook falls into the stereotype of vegan cooking (bland, super-healthy tasting food that desperately needs spicing up). Buy "Urban Vegan" or "Moosewood Cooks for Health" instead.
That said, this is an excellent cookbook for people following the Mcdougall or Eat-to-live weight loss programs - over 100 of the recipes are Eat-to-live compatible. Nearly every recipe is low in fat, and Mccarty focuses a lot on sea vegetables like dulse and konbu, which add depth to the dishes. This book is great for weight loss, as the endless variations allow you to go months without repeating a recipe.
One final note: Mccarthy is extraordinarily bad at naming dishes. She persists in calling tofu "bean curd", seitan "wheat meat" and pudding "pudding-gel", so that even the most appetizing recipes sound gross. "Boiled Vegetable Salad"? Really?
Buy this book for what it is - a health food book. Don't expect to entertain, or be particularly entertained yourself by this book.

Having been a follower of the TV program for years, I was delighted to have a lighter version of their recipes. Recipes are detailed as to why certain ingredients work, and all show the calories, fat, sat fat, and cholesterol in the before and after versions. As a diabetic, I appreciate all the short cuts I can get. It also does not hurt that the first listing is for Chicken Caesar Salad: my all time favorite go to meal.
My only criticism is that the binding is not spiral (allowing the book to be folded), but pages are large and lie flat should you need to have information close while cooking.

"Sproutman's Kitchen Garden Cookbook" is a great all-purpose book for anyone new to sprouts and sprouting and for the sprout vetran who is looking for more recipes and ideas. The tone is chatty and humourous. The book is a great read cover to cover, but it can also be read a section at a time, in any order.
I received this book as a gift and almost immediately I had trays and bags of sprouts in my kitchen. We've stopped putting lettuce on sandwiches and use various sprouts. Sprouts on salad, in stir-fry, in soup... I've tried several of the recipes with success. The sprout bread is really popular and so are the crunchy sprouts.
One word of caution: sprout bread has neither the flavour nor the texture of bakery bread. It is better. It is sweeter and more satisfying. It is also packed with nutrition. If you are expecting something close to regular bread, you will be disappointed. If you remember that what you are eating is something else entirely, you will love it.
